But what is your alternative? .223 is the same price. .22 is cheaper but still overpriced and very unavailable. The only alternative is pellet guns. There is nothing cheaper than .223 and 5.45 (except .22), so why would anyone unload their 74? It makes no sense.

a case of roughly 1000 7.62x39 will run me about what? $250

thats what over 2k rounds of 5.45 was going for and before sandy hook, it was cheaper.

I can tell some of you are struggling to comprehend the fullness of the circumstances with which we have been confronted, so I will spell it out for you very simply:

Commercial, non-corrosive 5.45 is/was very inexpensive, as much as $0.15/round cheaper than (steel cased!) .223, even for quality products like Golden Tiger.

The reason for this is because manufacturers/importers/dealers of commercial 5.45x39 were forced to compete with plentiful, inexpensive surplus ammunition for market share.

They will no longer need to do this.

yea i'm not totally understanding the big problem here, it's not like they banned the caliber, they just said no more steel core. There's plenty of non steel core for sale at a okay price. Last sunday when I bought a crate of 7n6 before this bullshit happened, I paid $390 (a crate is 2160 rounds). 18 cents per round. Not that great of a deal considering it is corrosive. 7n6 surplus was already kind of losing its value. This decision is still total bullshit though.

i can get brass cased 223 for $350/1000
7.62 is $250/1000 for golden tiger, cheaper if you want some of the older wolf ($225/1000)

at the very least they'd have to fight with 7.62

Id also like to point out that, while we may only pay a few bucks more here and there per case, that there are people in the gun industry whose lifeline is aquiring and importing this stuff, and that they'll lose money, which could result in less firearms industry overall.

anything that damages the bottomline of the industry will always hurt our agenda politically. Its one less politician or ad or lobbyist we have working for us.

Bill Clinton himself had the ban placed on the steel core 7.62, not the ATF. The ATF can only impose bans on imports or designated ammo that is labeled as armor piercing. Anything manufactured inside the U.S. is legal.
