Alright /k/omrades,
So I experienced a sudden re-allocation of my gubmint cheddar this year, and I'm looking at handguns. I've shot handguns before (bunch of glocks, smith & wesson revolvers, couple sigs, and my dad's shitty .357SIG taurus revolver) but none of them were .45.
I've researched a bunch of different handguns and walked into a couple local shops to handle them and get a feel for them. Here are my results:
S&W M&P-9 and 45: Horrible grip. Honestly I didn't see what all the fuss was about this gun. I tried compact and full size versions of both with multiple backstrap sizes (the store I handled it at gave a free sized backstrap with purchase). None of the models fit my hand right. I didn't even shoot it and I don't want too.
Glock 17 and 19: I was kind of underwhelmed. I was expecting a lot better. I know Glocks are known for awesome reliability, and it did fit my hand relatively well, but I was looking for that perfect feeling. I did however like the way the 19 fit my hand for a "compact" gun. Plus they were priced a bit higher than I was initially looking for. Its possible my expectations were
Springfield XD-9 and XD-45 and XD-S in 9mm and .45: Holy shit. It feels as though this gun was made for my hand. It was perfect. Love at first grip. The mag release was just in the right spot for my finger and the trigger felt great too. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the XD-S. The shortened grip leaves my pinky just hanging there, and if I’m gonna get the mag extension, I might as well get the longer barrel and get the service model
I’m 95% sure I’m going with the full size Springfield XD Service, but I’m not sure what caliber. I’m tempted to go with the 9mm because of cheaper ammo, less recoil, and higher capacity, but at this gun store its literally a $40 price difference between the 9mm and the .45. Should I go with .45 or 9mm?
