>>14080260Assuming its real SHTF and you had the good sense to stockpile enough ammo that scavenging is not an issue. At least for the first 5 yrs or so I would go with an AR-10 that had flip up sights and a quick detach scope. .308 win should be good enough for your generic defense/hunting.
I have a browning A bolt in .338 winchester mag and a savage in .338 lapua and unless you had a serious stockpile (which is impractical at the cost) or a large surplus of reloading equip for these they would be very rarely used.
I imagine most of your time spent in SHTF would be with a group of about 20-30 people in a remote location doing watchtower/guard details with occasional 2 man hunting parties being dispatched for hunt/scavenging. Would make sense to me to equip one man with a battle rifle and the other with some sort or precision scoped bolt gun.
Most others would be sleeping or working on crops/farm animals.
Solo SHTF I don't believe would be survivable for too long. Its just a matter of time until you run into a gang you can't sneak around who wants your shit.
