During WW2, which country had the best infantry weaponry? I always see people praising the mp40 but now i saw a docu stating it was actually kinda shit?
Any WW2 buffs around?

MP40 was alright but the PPSH was generally preferred. Thompsons were good but not really for the same usage.

Obviously the Garand was amazing. All the bolt actions were similar in effectiveness, although the nugget wasn't very good comparatively.

Where the Germans really stand out is their MGs. The 34 and 42 were excellent, excellent weapons. Oh and the Stg-44 was sweet.

The U.S. had the best standard service rifle. Semi auto > bolt actions.

Arguably also the "best" tanks in the sense that they worked and were standardized and pumped out at a huge rate. I suppose pound for pound, Russian tanks at the end of the war were the "best".

U.S. had the best Navy, by accidentally finding out that the aircraft carrier was the future. Best radios. Also best nuclear weapons.

Germans had the best in small things like helmets or GPMGs, but those fuckers were tinkering with shit often they could never standardize.

Japan had the worst everything.

The 42 had some major disadvantages, from what I remember, the biggest being that it simply went through ammo too quickly. I think the one video to US did on it claimed they needed a whole nother squad to carry ammo for their guns compared to a similarly gunned Allied unit using Brownings. The fact they cut the RoF for the MG3 also says 1500 RPM was a bit much.

Germany made fine weapons.
USA wasn't bad either but the Garand had a pretty shitty reload system. Reliable, but shitty.

The Gewehr 43 and SVT40 had a more traditional box mag so you could reload whenever you felt like it.

Faster rate of fire. Generally you can say that Mauser or it's copies like Springfield are better rifles overall... assuming you use 'em for anything but war, for example on shooting on range or hunting. Lee-Enfield is accurate enough and can spam more rounds in general direction of enemy.

Suomi or Thompson are way better guns, but more expensive to manufacture. If manufacturing details are the deciding factor then Sten, Grease gun, PPS or m/44 were even cheaper than PPSh.

The MP40 is a downgraded MP38

The MP40 was constanly cheapified throught the war as in the skipped certain part and the grip orginally had aluminium parts in it but in the ending of the war it simply a skeletonized steel grip

the MP38 and first versions deployed were said to be great but its no wonder they would replace them with the PPSH if the stumbled over one so late in the war

Magazines don't carry much ammo. Machine guns are still supposed to kill the enemy, not just make him hide in cover. That said, a slower rate of fire serves both jobs better because it allows the gunner to put his shots downrange more accurately and use less ammo when he's just pinning targets down.

Also, the ergonomics on the MG3 is not very good. Damn thing was made to be shot by midgets or something.

This matters incredibly little. Seriously, in the heat of a firefight, hearing a "ping" isn't going to happen, and usually soldiers have other friendly soldiers around them even if an enemy charges.

And having a "ping" announce presense is silly to sort about- you just fired off 8 rounds, the enemy knows about you.

All in all, it's a neglidable downside compared to the upside of a faster rate rate of fire than what anybody else had.

I've got both, he's right. the sights are a lot more comfortable, the action is much simpler, it's impossible to fuck up. Idk about god tier extraction, mines always been kinda funky, but I like that it's essentially spring loaded for when you need to eject an unfired round. Tilt the handle up and the action opens for you.

With that said, Mausers are nicer to shoot(minus the sights) in PERFECT conditions.

Not a very good fighter at all. Turned into a fireball with a single incendiary round, no protection, and let's not nforget it's terrible turning capabilities. It did decently up until the Hellcat came out, but then it was completely worthless.

Early war it had a kill ratio of 12 to 1.
After it had been outdated, japan started using it as a Kamikaze plane.

Its supposed to have been one of the most maneuverable planes of the war, even late war, despite its engine being outclassed.

Idk about that bro, every enfield I've ever fired or seen on jewtube has a weak titty extractor that throws brass like a 90 year old woman with arthritis. Also the US generally did have the best infantry weapons. If they issued the Garand in it's original vision with a .270 bullet in an intermediate cartrige with a 20-rd detachable box magazine, we'd probably still be using them.

Yeah, it's the concept of belt-feed machine gun firing a full power rifle round that lives on and almost become a necessity in modern combat, we don't exactly see BAR and Bren-ish guns nowadays, unless we count things like RPK or M27 IAR (which don't even fire a full power rounds).

Americans had huge problems with Zeroes until they captured one almost intact in Aleutians. Flight testing it revealed it's bad performance aspects to be exploited, but even then probably biggest thing affecting Japanese performance in air warfare was Japan running out of well trained pilots Japanese pre-war pilots had probably most comprehensive training in world and they had combat experience from fighting Chinese on top of that. Once they started to suffer losses they couldn't replace lost pilots with as well trained ones. Meanwhile US pilot training improved constantly as did equipment and tactics.

Nope, it had been completely replaced with the MAC 24/29, which was the only modern weapon that France was able to produce in enough numbers for WW2.

As for the Chauchat, it was probably still used by Belgium, Poland, Serbia, Romania and Greece, to name a few, chambered in 8 mm Mauser with straight, closed magazines.
Pretty sure Italy and Japan had worst automatic rifles than that.

The Thompson most certainly wasn't the best. The weighed a fucking ton, had an absurdly high ROF, and were far too expensive to properly mass produce, which is why there were way more grease guns. I've shot a Thompson, and the muzzle climb is ridiculous. You can control it with a little practice, but an SMG that weighs more than an AK shouldn't turn into an anti-aircraft weapon the second you pull the trigger.

Come on now, stop buying into fuddlore. Although it was certainly outdated by WWII, the Carcano is a simple and solid infantry rifle that's surprisingly lightweight and good-handling. The problem with many on them on the modern American civilian gun market is that they tend to be worn-out, often bubba'd (which fucks up the accuracy of those with the progressive rifling) and made of mismatching parts (it's not easy to find one with its original bolt today). A Carcano that's still in good shape is a very nice rifle. Where the Italians really DID suck were their machine guns, save for perhaps their Breda 38 tank MG.

Similar to the Italians, the Japanese had problems fielding decent, modern infantry MGs, but the rest of their small arms were pretty solid (particularly the Arisaka rifle). They also had an excellent navy, among the top 3 best in the world in 1941, and definitely gave the USN a hell of a fight all the way to the end of 1942. Their oxygen-powered torpedoes were by far the best in the world at the time and gave their surface ships a big advantage in night-fighting for a while.

Loads of combat experience? They had some combat experience and that was lot more than what essentially all US pilots lacked. Experience gives soldiers edge in combat just because they know how they actually react to actual battle. How to manage fear, panic and shit. Disproportionate part of casualties in all armies all service branches in every war tend to occur troops that are on their first days in combat.

US military of interwar years wasn't post WWII US military. Main lesson USA learned from WWI was having some sort of plans for war mobilization of industry as during WWI US war material production was kinda underwhelming to point where pretty much everything except personal weapons and food was supplied US Army by UK and French. In WWII that lesson was not letting military to wither underfunded after war like after WWI as building up capable military takes time and is most likely more expensive than maintaining existing military.

A rather sad example how US Army Air Corps managed in interwar years....

Keep in mind that most countries were using belt fed MG's alongside the box mag ones in roles similar to the 34. It's just that German squads were carrying the 34 in roles (squad level support, for example) that were being filled by what had been assumed to be more manageable weapons like the BAR. But as the war progressed the mag MGs showed no real benefit while having a host of drawbacks while the MG34 excelled.

Japan was pretty new to the whole weapon design and modernization thing. Trying to learn how things work on the fly in essence.

For instance, your picture is the very first indigenous designed and produced automatic weapon by Japan ever. They used the best round they had at the time (the second bullet they ever developed) and tried to make it work.

Of course, it's kind of difficult to both standardize and improve your weaponry when you're already in the war so.. there you go.

Source on this is my ass but I would guess a combination of Fudd leaders in charge of procurement (it was good enough for the Russo-Japanese war why change it?) butting heads with innovative type leaders introducing new weapons, combined with new weapons introduced in the late-late 30's after experience in China, compounded by a lack of sufficient industrial capacity to back up this whole clusterfuck in a timely manner.

I'm going to do some reading and see if I can get you a better answer, that is an interesting question.

The Mauser action is still popular today and has probably been copied more than any other rifle. The Lee Enfield is contender but Britain loses out because the Bren can't compare to the mg34 as a support weapon.

By the end of the war the US. Garand, the Browning back catalogue. The A bomb. Nothing else needs said.

I don't know about extraction but the Enfield was by far the best bolt action infantry rifle of the war. The strength of the action really doesn't matter when .303 killed people just as dead as 8mm. The sights were better, the trigger was better, the mag held twice as much, heavy free-float barrel from the factory, rapid firing and accurate enough to kill people in an infantry engagement. The action was made to be very open and easy to clear dirt and obstructions.

There's actually a pretty good reason for this. Japan is an island country (like the UK) that's also close to many other large islands (some of which had valuable resources) to the south, so it made sense for them to focus primarily on naval development. During the 20s and much of the 30s however, Japan's naval development was hindered by the Washington and London Naval Treaties (look 'em up on wiki for more details). In the meantime this kind of forced them to dabble in some ground warfare technologies for a while, such as tanks and LMGs, but later on in the 30s they finally decided to just ignore the naval arms treaties and start building up their navy again. This switching of focus led to the neglect of their ground forces from the late 30s up to the end of the war, as Japan had relatively limited resources to devote to military development.

I'm not sure about "huge numbers," but I do believe the Japanese did procure some Hotchkiss machine guns made in France on contract in the years leading up to the Russo-Japanese War, and made small-scale use of them during the war itself. Presumably they were made in their 6.5mm round, and likely influenced their decision to stick with Hotchkiss-type designs for their infantry MGs right up till the end of WWII.

Well it's a pretty simple blowback SMG, the big deal is the top loading magazine. It had a really light spring and empties ejected straight out of the bottom, so there was nothing for them to hang up on. It was very reliable, very accurate, well balanced and easy to fire from prone because there was no long magazine in the way.

Also, they came factory painted in camo and was a favourite of aussies and any yanks who could get their hands on one.

Not even close. Our park rangers are actual LEOs, usually with a resource or wildlife management degree.
The Canadian Army Rangers are part time search and rescue volunteers who sometimes show soldiers how to live in the wilderness.

DP-28 seriously isn't any better- in most pragmatic ways it's actually worse.

Both the magazines and bipod were subject to damage and the gun had to be redesigned to save the recoil springs

While you might assert that the Bren was badly designed for the war that actually happened (which is basically untrue), many parts of the DP-28 were just badly designed in general- hence the multiple redesigns required to make it an acceptable weapon.
