They are scared shitless (like ultraorthodox jews and tankies in the west still butthurt about israeli economic shift) Israel can show to MENA peoples everyone can live together without going nuts on religion and have a slice of the pie.
Every time israelis hired palestinians to work at their companies, every time a desalination plant was built at Gaza it was a bigger blow to them than IDF killing thousands of their ranks.
In order for Hamas to win they needed to destroy this, even if it meant harming their own people, they know violence breeds violence, so they may prosper in violence and hatred.
Sadly for them, they did forget you need its monopoly as their endgame, this is a generational conflict and the arrow always points in the West favor in the end.
So yes, they will remain a thorn to both israelis and palestinians AND the world like their cousins the haredim and assorted extremist jews who steal palestinian lands under religious excuses, a long disease which may or may not heal in decades to come but for now is a fact of life.
