West German M80 used a thin steel jacket with copper plating and it fragmented within 50 yards. I think Swedish-made M80 did that too.
>>63552936Not exactly. The bullet's base is squished and ejects lead out the back, and as it flattens the jacket breaks at the cannelure which is why the jacket turns to pieces rather than the bullet just breaking in two.
The twist rate doesn't influence fragmentation.
The fuddlore was that the fragmentation wasn't originally intended nor was the mechanism understood, so it was assumed that the 1:14" twist rate had bullets keyholing and they fragmented by hitting people sideways. But that was hogwash as keyholing bullets are not accurate.
Velocity and angle of impact determine how well 5.56 fragments. Not twist rate.
