What do you guys think is the best Heisei Godzilla movie and why? I really enjoyed the special effects, each movie feels like they step it up a bit further, but the plot seem to decay a bit, almost falling into Showa territory, so I'd say my favorite Heisei Godzilla film is vs Biollante.

I'd take an open world fighting game, IIRC Save The Earth or one of the other ones it was just one city all the action took place in.

Only question is what kaiju would be on the roster? Godzilla, Ghidorah, and maybe Mothra would be for sure.

I think a cool idea for a Godzilla game would be like Shadow of the Colossus, where you have to scale the enemy kaijus to weaken them while they fight Godzilla, but also have some stealth elements, creating some type of nightmare tension.

Anyone ever have giant monster nightmares where you had to run and hide from some sort of terrible beast?

Another game with Pipeworks style gameplay. Have the main Kaiju like Mothra and King Ghidorah have all their eras get models like Godzilla always got. Also give us Kaiju we haven't got to play as in the Pipeworks trilogy and PS4 game like Zilla.

Not because it's something everyone wants, it's just that I want another Gamera film.

I’m trying to think of a way to ask this without just sounding like I’m baiting, but what is it that people see in vs biollante? And 1985 for that matter.

Both are solid, good godzilla films but they both - moreso biollante - seem to top a lot of people’s favorites and while I do like them I dont really get what gets them such high marks for people either. They’re solid films but they dont stand out to me much compared to a lot of other godzilla flicks.

My favorites are Against Mechagodzilla, Shin, VS King Ghidorah, and of course the original Gojira.

Favorite kaiju are the godzilla main characters. Godzilla, geedrah, mothra, anguirus, rodan. Also have soft spots for megalon, destroyah, and gigan, pretty much entirely cause of the destroy all monsters melee game I played when I was younger.

2000 might be my favorite design, Shin might beat it out though.

I hope GvK doesnt suck, that’s as far as my hopes go.

Not really anything on my kaiju wishlist. A good fighting game would be cool I guess.

No worries. I am the same way with ShinG. It's solid but I expected/wanted something much more epic, unique & sci-fi from Anno.

> The semi comic relief hobo is lame & the leads shunningly refusing him when he offers help in the middle of apocalyptic hell is really bizarre and sadly indirectly results in his death. (did Japanese culture push hate or fear of poor people in the 80s?)
> Nether the suit nor the cybot's faces look all that great when straight on, the eyes are too large on both.

PROS
> Great main suit. Love the lower placement of the spines.
> The Cybot's mouth, fangs & curling lips look fantastic.
> Wonderful score.
> Probably the best city set of the franchise. Love that despite Godzilla's increased size the modern skyscrapers still tower over him.
> Everything feels sleek & incredibly modernized compared to the 1970s G films.
> Love the serious & ominous cold war tone.
> Some of the best military engagements & tech porn of the series.

MechaGodzilla 2 probably, other films do certain things better, but on average it's the best. Biollante's story is just too fucking dumb for me to ignore, even for a kaiju film, also biollante is in it for about 2 minutes.

Mechagodzilla 2 has a pretty nice human plot and baby zilla is cute, but I remember the kaiju fights being boring and the movie being longer than it needs to be, for me biollante has one of (if not the) best designs in the franchise and I like the backstory, I don't know why you think it's dumb, is it because of the spiritual undertones? I just wanna give a massive thank you to Raymond Burr, New World Pictures who distributed Return in the west were originally gonna make the dub a comedy but Burr refused and told them to take the Big G seriously.

While I think we all agree Gojira is vastly superior the American cut has it's place and importance in history and Burr did a great job in it

I loved this part of the movie, I like Godzilla movies where it centers around the idea of a man-made horror unleashed upon himself

Frankenstein, the concept at least is public domain, they can add Dr. Frankenstein, make BioMonster his kaiju and have Godzilla fight it.
Same goes for Dracula.
The only ones that need lawyer-friendly versions are Wolf-Man, The Creature, and maybe the Mummy.

You know, I've been thinking the same thing, we already have the lawyer friendly version of Frankenstein's monster in the Toho series, then we have the 80s fan film with the giant wolfman, how would we make a scenario where Dracula goes "screw this I'll take this reptile on myself" and somehow goes giant? Obviously he can't stay in his human form, so I'd envision his giant monster form looking similar to his bat beast transformation in castlevania, but there has to be a way he gets that form, perhaps one final deal with the devil and if he wins its eternal life but if he loses its his final end

Anon that has been watching all the Toho kaiju movies for the first time checking in, I've since watched Mothra and King Kong vs. Godzilla.

Mothra was awesome, the change in tone was quite welcome after watching Godzilla, Rides Again, Rodan, and Varan all in a row. The fact it didn't end with them killing the monster again was nice. Nelson was a really fun villain, and 'New Kirk City' made me smile.

King Kong vs. Godzilla was a lot of fun and reassures me that I'm definitely going to enjoy the lighter tone going forward. I enjoyed the corporate satire slement of the human story in this one a lot too. I do think it's bullshit that Kong won, mind you.

It's not a Monsterverse thing, Shin Godzilla was full mocap CGI. I mean they built a suit and animatronic for it but it it ended up going unused because Anno and Higuchi thought the CGI was better.

Dougherty had already done good with Trick r Treat and Krampus, and I really liked King of the Monsters. He was clearly a fan going for a modern Heisei vibe with Showa callbacks and did what he set out to do.
I haven't heard anything good about Deathnote or Blair Witch, or about Wingard as a director in all the time I've followed these movies. I'm expecting the worst and hoping to be surprised

I would have Gamera pull 1 more big new power out of his ass to defeat the Gyaos swarm after G3 and it's so destructive it tears a hole between dimensions leaving him stranded in the GMK universe. He buries himself in the seabed to heal.

GMK Godzilla regenerates from his heart a few years after GMK and his awakening is sensed by Gamera.

Basically keep the GMK Godzilla suit & Gamera 3 suit almost exactly, aside from 1 or 2 adjusted details (make Godzilla's belly less fat, Gamera's regenerated arm be unique from the other)

Shusuke Kaneko directs.

If its set following the end of Gamera's heisei series and doing that, it'd make more sense for Godzilla to be Junior when he took over at the end of Vs. Destroyah, Junior took a liking to humans and would naturally oppose Gamera's quest to kill them all.

I read they wanted to make a movie with him in the 90s but couldn't because he was still derivative of King Kong. The final movie ended up being vs. King Ghidorah. There was a sentai-like tokusatsu series and movie Toho made that had a robot gorilla with a design based on what the new Mechanikong may have looked like.

Godzilla can pull all the stunts he wants but we know this Kong exists to hunt down reptile kaiju known as the skullcrawlers, who rumor has it they are related to Godzilla, and we know they are appearing in the new movie. KotM ends with an ancient painting of Kong and Godzilla figthing, so we know their rivalry is a big deal. Kong could exist as an entity "designed" to assasain Godzilla similar to how Godzilla is said to exist to keep balance. I wouldn't be too surprised if Kong's species turns out to be the "whalers" of the titans' world, with Godzilla's species as the whales, and the tale of this movie has Kong as Ahab and Godzilla as Moby Dick...

You ripped this off from the explanation of the Mutos. Where they said the muto species sort of evolved to be able to counter all of the Godzilla’s moves. For example; laser beam resistant skin, emp field of influence, and the mutos have the ability to sort of, “attract” the Godzillas (who mostly want to live underwater) to the mainland. Like magnets. Which makes perfect sense and happens in the movie. I remember them saying the mutos evolved with Godzilla to become Godzilla Parasites. And the whole moby dick take is not only done to death, boring as fuck, but they did the whole captain ahab mobs dick cliche in the first 2017 King Kong movie.

The biggest aircraft carriers irl *technically* have enough space for them to stand on, the main issue would be they're too structurally weak. The deck would cave in once one of them climbed on top, assuming it didn't capsize from the attempt. Have the ship get torn apart just by virtue of being an unstable battlefield and it will work enough for me to suspend my disbelief

Best films of Heisei were the beginning and the very end aka '84,Biollante to Destoroyah The others rely too much on beamspam and they're not as interesting conceptually, well I guess '84 isn't that special but It's tone and soundtrack are really cool. Biollante and Destoroyah were creative designs that allowed for more interesting battles than beamspam, Biollante had fun mad scientist and espionage tropes, and Destoroyah is just apocalyptic.

If Toho starts doing their own Godzilla movies again, I'd love to see more new and original kaiju again. I know the last few ones we've gotten are kind of lackluster (Orga, Megaguirus, the MUTOs) but I'd rather see what some young, creative designers can pull off and than another kaiju movie with the same monsters that we've seen time and time again.

The Heisei Godzilla and Gamera had some cool new original monsters (Biollante, Destroyah, Legion, Irys) and I'm kind of bummed out that we didn't get more of those.

God dammit, I wish they’d stop this. That was the biggest issue with KOTM’s fights.

But I do like Kong’s background a lot. It honestly really solidifies Kong as a character over just a big monster, especially by showing he is actually very different from his ancestors.

I mean, human cut always aren't necessarily exclusive to KotM. I just feel the movies are too long (2+ hours is a bit much IMO). Though, rewatching OG King Kong vs Godzilla today, which was 90 min or so, the fight wasn't anymore than 10 min and they didn't even fight the first time as Kong just threw some rocks, got hit by the atomic breath and then walked away.

I don't see the hype about Destoroyah, the only cool thing about him is the name and design, the concept behind the movie is amazing, ending the Heisei era with a homage to the movie that started it all and the montage at the end are pretty nice touches, but the movie itself is pretty bad and I'd say it's one of the weaker ones from that period.

Mechagodzilla's only organic part is Ghidorah's brain, the rest are machines to keep it alive and "robot machinery".

It cant fly, but is able to be deconstructed into three parts for transport, Dorsal fin/Tail section, Head/Upper Torso, Legs/Abdomen.

The thing with streaming is that (at least for the moment) a big release like GvK doesn't have to compete with much. Like I think WW84 probably did much better releasing on Christmas day streaming than it would have in theatres, because it had no competition and people were gagging for a "real" movie to watch

They killed of the dad character in the script, then just happened to get the amazing Cranston in the role, when it was too late to change anything. The main issue here is that if the dad character was boring, and the son character was great, then it would not have been a problem, but it was the opposite.

Kong's vulnerability in the original film was what made him endearing however, it also made him less of a spectacle for kaiju fights and later films had to come up with one off abilities that don't jive well with his original depiction to work

Gamera tends to lose, then come back better, but he always has a really handy arsenal of powers at his disposal.

Kong? He monke. He has flammable fur, he can’t fly, he has no energy blasts or special powers, and sometimes there’s monsters he fights that are actually stronger or bigger than him (or have some other advantage). But but because he doesn’t have a lot of advantages, he finds new and creative ways to win, and because he has to rely on his hands and fists he knows how to fight like a motherfucker. It gives him this unique underdog quality where you can’t wait to see him use his surroundings as weapons or figure out a way around his enemies.

Great examples
>When he gets tired of a T-Rex tearing at his skin with its teeth, he breaks its fucking jaw
>In the Jackson remake he uses vines, trees, and cliffs to keep an advantage over multiple V-Rex
>In King Kong vs. Godzilla he gets tired of Godzilla’s fire breath and sticks a tree down his throat
>In Skull Island when he’s getting whooped by a Skull Crawler, he realizes he can use a chain and a propeller to cut its throat

That’s part of what makes him so great. You know he’s the champion of his world, yet he also feels vulnerable enough to root for.

I'm not sure where the disconnect is here. I'm not saying the problem is that there's a human part and a monster part, but that the human part is bad and drags on and the monster parts don't feel worth sitting through the human parts.
