So a lot of people that played TF2 also happened to watch MLP (among other shows and anime). Or at the very least, they knew about it. If you played TF2 a lot, you were probably jerking it to anime or digital art in general. And the places that had a lot of digital art back in the day, also had a decent amount of pony art.
