Before that, the fandom generally viewed Celestia and Luna as deities. Primordial forces given flesh. Cadance represented the death of Faust's vision to a lot of lorefags.
Couple it with Derpygate and there was a sense that it was the end of the ride to a lot of people. That it was still good, but now that Faust was totally gone, it was gonna get worse.
