There's whole intrinsic belief that when you use this term you are somehow a better fan than those who call themselves "bronies". It's semantics,what's the point? A innocous fandom term shouldn't have any bearing on how you act as a fan.
Even if you were had a pony avatar or something related to the show at this point you would be referred to as a brony by people outside the fandom whether you like it or not.
