Its lost a lot of its bite over the years by fan works and even canon, but fans should do well to remember that the Everfree was established as a forest so dangerous and unpredictable that almost no one ever comes out alive. It's so unpredictable, in fact, that one of the most versatile magic users in the series got wrecked and would have stayed wrecked if not for a lucky encounter with Fluttershy.
With that in mind, what would you think of someone who chose to live there instead of your town? Especially if they succeeded? They'd have to be anything but normal, supernatural even and something akin to one of the monsters that live there. Anything that can regularly face down dangerous things is also dangerous at the very least.
