We started with the best tactics we had, ones that can defend fairly reliably while overall scoring more goals than /mu/ (not always, of course, we're still talking about PES). If they didn't work, and we needed to score (like for example when the game is tied 2-2), we had a more offensive preset ready, at the risk of our defense performing worse (which is not worth it when we're winning, but worth it when we're tied or losing).
If we switched to the offensive preset and subsequently conceded a goal, people would be mad we were too hasty instead. Either you win, and then what you did was right, or you lose, and then what you did was wrong. But with the random nature of PES, you can never tell if the other option was really better or worse instead.
