For example: The reason the ponies are so involved with the weather and ecosystem of Equestria is because of Discord's imprisonment. It was the chaos that drove nature forward on it's own. Celestia and Luna (embodiments of order or "harmony") imprisoned Discord in a power play masquerading as a righteous revolution.
With the master of chaos imprisoned, Equestria's ecology was no longer automated and the ponies had to step up to run it themselves. Because the world must maintain a balance of order and chaos, the Everfree Forest sprouted up near Ponyville and Canterlot (near the focus of order).
This got thrashed a little when by Hearth's Warming Eve when we are shown that the ponies managed all this stuff pre-Equestria but there is nothing saying Discord couldn't have been imprisoned earlier, or more than the two times we've witnessed.
