I don't think he ever was, but because they're both quiet types people have liked to ship them. Though if you read the comics apparently Mac is some kind of sexy horse because every girl in town kind of whistles and giggles when he walks by. He's just oblivious to most of them.

While it is a cute ship and brings back memories of fluttermac I just hate that they didn't keep things consistent.

Cheermac has been about as subtle as lyrabon and people just accepted and went with it. No it was never confirmed even after the CMC episode but they have always been little hints here and there. I don't like shipping but I do like that they kept it a thing in the series after the episode.

Then they just throw this ship in randomly. I'm with most in thinking it is cute but it feels like the writer never watched the show before.

Not exactly. That was entirely fan headcannon. Here we have two very good looking but socially awkward farm kids making eyes at each other while blushing like teenagers. And it's cannon. Big difference.

Plenty of solid romances come from writing to each other.
