Part of the problem I'm having in writing this stems from not having an idea of what the show should have become without Twilight's ascension. There's no doubt that it's the most prominent narrative thread of the latter part of the show, and being immersed in it for so long has coloured my perception somewhat, to the point where my deference to canon is at war with my creative sensibilities. Thus, I don't know what sort of changes I would make, or even could make, if I could change events from within the show's established canon.
That's where you guys come in.
To the people that didn't like/want Twilight's ascension, what would you have happen otherwise?
Would you prefer if the status quo of the earlier seasons were maintained, but the events of later seasons still happen?
Should Twilight still have symbolically graduated from being Celestia's student, perhaps to some sort of harmony/friendship scholar, but without the wings?
If you're not entirely opposed to her ascension, is it because it happened too early in the show's run? If so, would you have been okay with it happening in the penultimate or final season?
