English, Scottish, Irish, South African's, the Eternal shitposter all sound different, and even among them you have multiple accents depending on the region. Same thing in America, there dozens of different accents all over the place. And of course Shakespeare era English had significant variation from modern English (I mean current century English, I know victorian English technically is modern English).
Language really isn't as simple as "the most people, or the highest class, talk similar to this so that's the original accent." English itself was an evolution from old and middle English which sounded more German than English, and even back then different accents would have been common and dictated the evolution of the language.
And don't forget the most "British" of the American accent, Mid-Atlantic, was an entirely artificial accent invented specifically among entertainers of the early 1900's rather than something that naturally developed.
