The setting and the characters have got a lot of potential that rarely gets put to use in the show. I get to practice my writing craft by doing short stories about ideas I consider interesting. It boosts my ego when I get praise for it. That, and a bit of good ol' sublimation.

With fanfiction, it is both earier to write and easier to market over regular fiction. You're given a strong base to start in for fanfiction and are given an audience as big as the number of people who like to read fanfiction from whatever you are writing for. Curiosity is a strong part of human nature and leads to a lot of fanfiction being what-ifs which draws people in and also gives the writer and outlet to try to piece out those what-ifs in their own way. This leads to a general better experience for both the fan and writer.
