This agreement ended up changing a lot of words that were written a certain way due to grammatical rules, and if you had any doubts about how they were written, you would just think on the rules themselves. With the rules eliminated and the words randomly changed, you end up having to memorize them. The changes are so random that in Brazilian Portuguese, some of those words are written the same way as we did prior to the agreement.
Personally, I keep using the old grammatical rules, since a lot of writers and journalists also do it with no consequences.
As for my job, it's a shitty one as Microsoft technical support for consumers, where I have to deal with a lot of Brazilian colleagues and customers despite only providing support to Portugal.
I go ballistic with them since I can fully understand them, even when they have those thick northeastern accents, while most of them simply refuse to try to understand Portuguese and claim that we are speaking another language.
