She ended up being friends with a male colleague teacher who is also an ex-police detective, and he keeps stumbling on to things that her superhero side is dealing with. So the two keep running into one another, but in costume and out, kind of giving that Clark/Lois/Superman dynamic.
Superhero girl disguised as a guy is kind of awkward with personal relationships and the ex-detective is dealing with feelings of liking them back. This was back in the 90s, when the general trope was "if you like them and they're a girl it's because you were subconsciously attracted to the girl" so the gayness was played more as a joke, since the basic idea was that he's attracted because she's actually a woman. But you can run with whatever angle you really want.
>racist charicaturesI guess the villains can be read as generically oriental, if you want to take that route. Everyone looks kind of strange so it's not a great impression, but given that I can think that, there's probably something there.
The comic goes a lot harder not everything than the cartoon, with more violence and nudity and implied rape. But most people probably don't know the comic.
