Very simple actually.
So many people were interested in a revival of a beloved show that it broke viewership records for its season 1 debut.
...Then those viewers saw how much the reboot sucked, wasn't like the original and brought no one back. And they never came back to season 2 which got no hype, no discussion and got little viewership.
So they cut season 3 by 2 episodes. Yes, it failed that bad because it was that bad of a show
