Networks don't want to pay more up front because that comes directly out of their pocket which they may or may not make back. They'd rather pay a nominal fee, then pay a percentage of profits so they don't risk losing anything.
Basically, artists always get screwed. This new vaulting bullshit is the newest low since it ensures that not only do they lose any potential income for the future, but their legacy is lost to the ages. It's a double fuck you and it's awful.
