Kami lowers his head. "The Dragon Balls draw upon some of the universe's creative, positive energy. Which leads to an equal buildup of destructive, negative energy, contained within the Dragon Balls themselves. Over time, the energy leaves the Dragon Balls and the universe's forces balance out... but only over the course of many, many years. A hundred or more, depending on the buildup. I had designed them to be able to hold a significant amount of this negative energy."
That... that sounds bad. Goku tilts his head. "Couldn't you just wish away the bad energy then?"
"It would result in gaining an amount of negative energy equal to that needed to remove it." Kami states with a sigh. "And a slight increase from merely making a wish."
Goku frowns. "Ah. Dang."
