I've seen "well no one had any good mirrors back then" to "heavily styalized", to "they're not depicting people but actually the first abstract ideas of deities" and even, "oh, well it's a self-portrait so they are just looking down at themselves and so their sculpture is obviously going to be short and wide".
Yet never have I seen an account saying "oh yeah, no this image idea is just what they found attractive back then in prehistory".
