After the first loot, it is quite obvious that they will acquire some kind of citizenship (or whatever else would pass for it) - for appropriate donation to the city (or some other contribution).
While PCs might have to pay some set sum to whatever corporation/guild they would belong, they will become semi-independent from the feudal system pretty soon. Consequently, the whole "peasant" bullshit is relevant only during first sessions, and only if PCs start in some specific place where they are still recognized as serfs. Any description of feudal system should reflect this properly.
Full explanation would, probably, require a big long-post, but I'll be reading Lion&Dragon now (which seems to be about the same thing; so I might post about both it and Skerps simultaneously).
