Roughly eight years ago, the storyline was about a crazy being called Yawgmoth, a mad fucker who wanted to make his own plane. This plane was called Phyrexia and its colour was black. Phyrexia was essentially a biomechanical wasteland full of necromancy and biological corruption. If you're into body horror, you'd love Phyrexia. Anyway, when he was trying to lay siege to the "primary" plane, Dominaria, he was eventually thwarted by the creations of the Best Planeswalker Ever, Urza - these creations being a golem, a man and a crazy magical flying ship, I think.
Anyway, Yawgmoth died, Dominaria was freed but Phyrexia lived on in the form of a strange resource, Phyrexian oil. When Yawgmoth was killed, the golem Karn had a little bit of that oil splashed on to him, that he never found. Karn was gifted with a Planeswalker's spark, from his creation by Urza and left to craft his own plane, called Mirrodin, a mechanical world of copper trees and mercury sea and etcetera. The first plot of Mirrodin was all about how the initial guardian of Mirrodin that Karn built went on a crazy rampage and abducted people from other planes to live on his world and crazy shit, turning it into an odd fusion of flesh and metal.
