Hell was tattooed into you at a young age by the end of your mother’s wooden spoon. You believe in it unconditionally. It was always real for you. What good little Catholic boy wouldn’t believe his mother?

But it was a distant place in your childish nog, a place where the devil spent the day poking away at Hitler in a boiling cauldron of pitch. The deeper truth didn’t sink in for you until high school, when Mr. Canoochi (the “Big Gooch”) got up in front of the class and began drawing big concentric circles in the air, pulling your attention away from Alice Burinski’s badly strained bra strap.

Hell wasn’t just real, it was organized. There were levels for the gluttonous, the angry, and the greedy. Close to the bottom was a place for people like you, the frauds and impostors. Just one step above the deepest and most horrible layer of Hell.

In a way, the Gooch liberated you. Someone like you was never going to clean up their act and turn to Jesus; talking your way into the shorts of the girl’s track team was just too much fun. If the circles of Hell had in fact been a Venn diagram you’d have been at the center of all of them except one.

For everything you’d done up ‘til now, you’d never let people down. Not anyone you cared about anyway. When you made it big, you gave back to everyone. Your ex-wife, your mistress, your mentor, the best kids from your hood, and your parents all got a piece to live on. But now you’re dead and so is Jeremy, probably.

Everything is all your fault and now Satan is going to gnaw on your bones.

A sulphuric breeze runs across your form. This is just like Mr. Canoochi said it would be. You almost regret conning that poor bastard into believing you had potential.

The toxic air burns your eyes and you reach reflexively for your face to rub them, dislodging a couple of bags of peas that were carefully positioned on your chest. You pick them up and study them; they’re slick with condensation, recently thawed. Ignoring the painful sensation in your neck, you look around. Your eyes struggle to focus in the poor lighting but you’re obviously in someones living room. There’s a old, half-burnt away mantle with stale old ashes still in the fireplace. To your left sits collapsing bookshelf, filled with archaic paper books. A few dense volumes have been stolen from it and used to replace the missing leg of a battered wooden coffee table upon which sits a chipped bowl of foil wrapped hard candy.

Foul air blows through some badly stained window curtains.

You try and sit up and are greeted instantly by pain throughout your torso and back. A half a dozen additional bags of peas fall into your lap, revealing the blood that has dribbled down to stain the collar of your shirt and the numerous rips and tears in the previously white uniform you wore under your hazmat suit. The suit itself is nowhere to be seen.

Undoing a few buttons you examine your chest and find that it's essentially one huge bruise. Thankfully, the swelling seems to have been mitigated by the judicious application of peas...

You straighten yourself out and shift position on the ratty sofa. Your hands are covered with dried blood and mucus but you do your best to rub it off before picking up one of the little candies. It has a fish on the wrapper.

Putting it into your mouth... AUGH! It's salty *and* sour *and* bitter. Fuck, that's terrible!

You spit the candy into the ashes of the fireplace, outraged that someone would disguise something so foul as candy. The rush of anger helps bring back some clearer memories of what has happened and where you are.

You get cautiously on your feet. You're still feeling a little wobbly but you can walk without much pain.

Looking out the window... you see nothing. Everything beyond this side of the street is shrouded in foul smelling smog. Probably blowing in from Junk Bay.

You nose catches a whiff of coffee from a room nearer in the house but you also spot an exit in the opposite direction.

Beat to hell or no, you're going to need to get to work soon or Devlinson really will pop you...

You follow the coffee smell into a kitchen thats as badly weathered as the rest of this house. Amanda is there, snoring gently with her head in her arms at a small table. An empty mug sits not far from her, its insides stained with coffee.

Speaking of coffee, there's an antique-lookign machine chugging away next to a filthy stovetop. Looks like its operating on an automatic schedule that Amanda set last night.

You look for a decent mug while it finishes brewing, finally selecting a bright red one with the Hong Kong insignia on it.

She seems genuinely upset by this but doesn’t push the matter, asking only that you refill her coffee. You wish you could tell her that you’d be able to stay but indentured felons don’t get time off…

The coffee is strongly acidic and helps wipe the taste of the “candy” from your mouth.

You do your best to be polite about saying goodbye and assure her you’ll be back at the end of the day. You really just can’t stay.

She shakes her head drowsily.

“Whatever Vince. If you’re going to crash here again tonight just bring dinner.”

You consider what kind of dining options she might like as you get into your van. Those thoughts end as you get inside: the passenger seat is stained a rusty brown by Jeremy’s oxidated blood and the sight of it makes your stomach knot up.

Today is going to be a tough day.

The van shuttles itself to work while you fiddle with your communicator, debating whether or not to call Zheng and find out about Jeremy's condition.

In the end you decide that knowing now would just make things worse. You need to be focused to do your job, not grieving. There will be time for that later, if necessary...

Instead you plug in a detour for a local store that sells cleaning supplies. The employees give you funny looks when you walk in, all ripped up and splattered with gore, but you ignore them and pick out several extra-strong varieties of cleaner.

You ignore the cashier and pay before walking out.

"And Clarissa says get the hell out of this lab."

You do just that and return to your car. It's now 7:35.

You pick a fairly low key loadout and give the house a quick thermal sweep.

There's currently only one inhabitant, seated on the first floor with two steaming hot mugs of something.

Looking specifically for evidence of termite infestation, you turn up the goggles resolution to the max to spot the tiny tunnels of the termites, who seem to have made their way up from under the house to the second floor. You're going to have to get into some crawl spaces today...

Fairly confident that this is going to be a straight forward job once you find the main nest, you stride to the front door and ring the door bell.

A finely aged Asian woman meets you at the door in a tight fitting T-shirt and jeans.

"You're here early, Mr..." -she pauses to read your nametag- "Esperanza. Maybe you'd like to come inside and have a hot drink before you get started?"

"Mrs. Shan? I didn't realize you'd be home..."

"Oh, well you know. My husband is the one who spends time at home with the kids so he took them out on a playdate today in expectation of your visit. Someone had to stay to greet you, right?"

"I.. suppose."

She leads you inside. Those jeans are very... form fitting.

"Sit, drink. Tell me about your plan for this infestation of mine. It's very insidious, I think..."
