Rate my houserules. I am going to be starting a campaign at my FLGS to compete with Adventurer's League, so people will be coming to play that I don't necessarily know. To avoid looking arbitrary I have set some limitations to prevent powergaming. I'd like some feedback please. Shitposting will be ignored.
>standard array
>no variant human, but humans get an extra skill proficiency
>no tieflings, drow, kender, kenku, or any other freakshit races
>no feats, except for Athlete, Actor, Defensive Duelist, Dual-Wielder, Linguist, Martial Adept, Mobile, Skullker, and Tavern Brawler
>no multiclassing. fuck off with your minmaxing.
>ASIs must be +1 to two, no +2 to one, fuck off with your minmaxing
>if you roll a nat 1 on a ranged attack you must roll again, if you get another nat 1 that means you hit a random adjacent creature (nat 20 autohits so I see nothing wrong with this)
>spellcasters can only learn new spells from scrolls they find
>8 hour short-rest, 1 week long-rest
>all XP rewards are halved, for slower advancement

Yes. All creatures can alter their movement type. There are rules for this in the combat rules.

If your group is 4 + GM, you're now basically 3 people fighting and one Julliard performer singing and dancing at the map sidelines. While your party might not hate you, they certainly don't feel any less functional or competent when you're away.

Hot take: not really radical. Level 1 is less deadly, easier to balance encounters due to monsters being less swingy with their damage, meaning front liners can sustain more easily, slightly improves flat damage reduction like Heavy Armor Master.

I map my map/dungeons on OverHeadProjector acetate and then place them on a battle mat. Since my place of work has sizes from A0 - A6 I can have lots of flexibility and it is all "free". Also allows you to quickly add hidden rooms and whatnot without wasting time drawing in game or making your players think you pulled it out your ass.

What do you think of GMs that show you the layout of the entire dungeon as soon as you enter it? Not necessarily whats hiding behind every corner or where treasure is, but just the general layout. I think it could add some different kind of metagaming to the game?

It helps makes things less random and risky, I suppose. Less of a chance to randomly kill some one by rolling some big numbers.

The only issue I'd really see is any monsters that have special effects on criticals, though you could probably change some of those to being extra damage when it has advantage without altering much

I use Illwinter's Floorplan Generator since my games are online with friends because that's cheapest + easiest way to do things, it gets the job done but I wish there were more tilesets for it. Still, not bad for 8 bucks on steam.

Look at the dragon's stats and actions. I assume they're gonna fight the dragon in the dragon's lair, which is incredibly dumb but an extremely DND player thing to do. Give it some space to fly, maybe a couple perches where puny arrows and spells are all that can reach it. Better still if there are terrain hazards that the dragon can ignore that are dangerous for PCs. Better still if there are lair actions, or if the beastie has ways to separate party members. Build your dragon a nice cozy lair and have it plan to wreck face on anybody stupid enough to wander in.

A player at my table asked if he can learn Firebolt (the cantrip) but change its damage type to Lightning for thematic reasons.

Probably not. The main downside of Fire is that it's one of the more resisted damage types, but it's not like Firebolt is an amazing cantrip anyway. Plus there isn't even a real ranged lightning cantrip.

I'd say it's fine as long as you haven't explicitly said or implied there will be enemies that are weak to lightning at which point he's not doing it for "thematic reasons". Tl;Dr as long as it's just for character fluff i don't see the issue and I'd personally allow it at my table. Change the name to Lightning Spark or something.

Off the top of my head, if I had to pick a party that I'd be playing in for a long-term campaign beginning now... Ranger, paladin, bard, wizard. Dedicated healers make for less exciting encounters imho. Four will always be ideal party size (five is fine, but given the chance I'd always pick four.) Ranger is a personal favourite class (revised obv,) paladins are best and most interesting frontliners, bards are my favourite support class and if you're going to have a caster more often than not it may as well be a wizard.

Caveat: if any one of these characters is an utter ranger/paladin/bard/wizard cliche I'm OUT.

My party are about to enter a lavish mansion party run by yuan-ti cult. They will enter the first level that will be surface level party, then gain access to the vip area on the second level with more intense drug use and snake elements (crawling on the floor, statues, etc) then the third where the snake pits are happening to create more of themselves.

But! I need music for the first two levels. I really can't find any good party ambience, the only ones I can find are the tavern ones, but they sound way too european and just too much drinking. I need more esoteric feeling, more opium den than contemporary bar.

Anyone have something they think might fit? It would really heighten the experience I think.

(Using this for the final two levels when it startss to get weird and creepy, thanks to the anon who recommended it!)

The current stage of my campaign is heavily influenced by the STALKER games in terms of general atmosphere and overarching narrative of an anomalous and alien force impacting the world and creating an area in which the laws of reality are dangerously altered, in our case a vaguely-defined valley out in the wilderlands. In this valley a supernaturally-dense (and possibly intelligent) fog mutates living things, twists space and time and prevents magical items from functioning normally. There's the "grotes", ordinary 5e monsters twisted into new and uh grotesque forms, "harrows", areas where the ordinary laws of reality and common magic no longer apply, and "rarities", objects imbued with this strange and alien force that behave like powerful magical items, albeit with obscure effects and often unpredictable triggers. This phenomenon is also the explanation for Mystics in my setting.

Anyway I've given myself a fairly broad palette to paint with here, so I'm seeking the most bizarre and unique ideas you're all able to come up with. One recurring idea I think I'll be using is the "neuter", a rarity that nullifies the effects of other rarities and even harrows as long as it's in contact with them.

Also the party (four person) is currently level 8 if that affects your ideas at all. They'll probably get up to at least level 11 while they're in this phase of the campaign.

I'm about to start my first DnD campaign with some friends, most of whom have never played.
So far we have chosen our classes and made our characters and we are playing as a group of Gnomes that have led a rebellion against our Halfling overlords.
We have a paladin (me), a barbarian, a mage, a druid, and a bard.

Will a paladin be able to solo tank (the DM said I could use the intimidation skill as an agro mechanic) as well as be the healer with the bard as support?

What's the deal with not being allowed to reroll for things like searching, lock picking, or persuading? Doesn't it make sense that if I fail I might want to try again?

Would it be feasible to play the campaign as a secret CE oath breaker and emerge after the "final boss" has been killed?

Also, what's up with "flaws"? Do I or do I not make up a character flaw for myself in exchange for a mild buff that the DM agrees on? That's how it was explained to me, but I was told I was wrong.

holy trinity (healer, tank, damage) doesn't strictly apply to 5e. intimidation is in fact not supposed to work as an "aggro" mechanic. you can do things that mechanically encourage opponents to attack you and not your friends, including Compelled Duel, Goading Strike, and just like... standing in the way

if your character can reasonably be expected to achieve a given action with enough tries and there is no immediate consequence for failure then the DM shouldn't necessarily be asking for a roll in the first place. unless the lock breaks off or something

abso fucking lutely not, no. the Flaw section on your character sheet is just a place for you to write foibles that diffentiate your character from a perfect idealized version of himself in order to make role playing more interesting, ie "he compulsively defies authority" or "he can't stop getting drunk in his down time" or, hopefully things more interesting than those which I just came up with off the top of my head

I think Rogue or Bard would be pretty interesting. Bards should be obvious due to magical secrets letting them branch out, but Rogues are also quite versatile. A Swashbuckler frontliner, a Thief serving as a medic with the healer feat, an Arcane Trickster to provide spellcasting, a ranged Scout to fill in as a Ranger, a Mastermind for easy advantage. Plus you'll be able to easily cover any array of skills.

The rules don't seem to cover the nitty-gritty of changing their "status", so it comes down to what the DM says you can or can't do. But it's not likely any sane DM would rule that you can have your mount act on your initiative, then say "oh, I change modes, now it can bite" halfway through your/its turn.

What the rules ARE clear on is that if you aren't directing it yourself, it rolls initiative. So the second you say you're letting it act on its own, it rolls initiative and is placed in the order.

As I see it, however, this question is an elaborate way of asking if you can double-dip. The advantage of directing your mount is being able to move on your own turn; otherwise you can only move on its initiative, which can be a disadvantage for prospective melee fighting. The advantage of letting it act alone is letting it attack. You want to get the benefits of both. Short of a gullible or permissive DM, the rules suggest you aren't supposed to get both.

In the interest of finding an actual solution, I'd probably allow a player to "swap" styles at the top of the initiative count, but if there was any whiff of exploitation of the initiative rules to gain a meta-advantage, I'd change or disallow it.

Monster damage overall goes down slightly. Slightly fewer outright kills of players (which were rare to start).

As dramatic as crits feel, they're not that devastating in the long run. They're basically just a free hit for the monster - as in, they get their normal damage and then a free extra hit's worth of damage. Less, actually, because only the dice are multiplied. If the party could survive four or five hits from a monster, a crit is just about two instead of one.

the idea is to slightly increase the difficulty at the same time to compensate. ideally results in more mechanically difficult encounters with less potential for blowout due to variance

basically the idea is that players have been asking me to increase combat encounter difficulty to make them more nail-biting. (I usually run Hard bordering on Deadly but the players are pretty competent.) I was hesitating to do, since there's an increased chance of having a combat encounter that should have been solvable by the party but gets ruined by some first turn crit damage high roll which is a supremely uninteresting outcome (in my personal opinion). particularly with a single strong enemy / 'boss' which is going to be hitting hard in the first place making variance worse

Armor of Agathys, you can cast it pre combat so it's never costing you an action mid combat to setup, and the damage it deals is fucking scary at higher levels.

if a creature is going to town on your ass with multiattack it quickly regrets it because if it cannot break through the armor in a single hit, it's taking another 25 cold damage on top of the initial 25, you just dealt 50 damage with no action or reaction required and you took less damage because of the temp hitpoint buffer and you get it all back on a short rest.
if you can manage to get access to resistance to the damage they're dishing out, like via Stoneskin or some other effect, that it's effect is magnified even more so because the temp hit points are lasting far longer.

no saving throw, only condition is it must be a melee attack, which is 80% of what's coming your way, and even reach doesn't help the creature, hell as written a creature using thorn whip 30ft away triggers the damage

Situations matter. It's a godsend for public play, large groups, limited playtimes, and loud rooms.

Room by room mapping is more fun and immersive, but slow and needs very clear communication or things can get badly tangled. One way or another you have to pick your poison.

if your going strength based, why not opt for Shield Master with one of your feats, like at 6th level, it gives you the bonus action prone, which is advantage on all melee attacks, both yours and your allies.
if your using a 2hander then just opt for Trip Attack

How do you people fucking find other nerds to play with?

I've been looking forever for just a vanilla DnD game, right out of the books, and have come up empty. Everything online is either custom to shit or closed to 140 applicants, and the closest game store is about an hour drive away.

I just want to freeze imaginary creatures for 3 hours once a week. I didn't think I'd have to be a detective to hunt down a fucking game.

yeah he's a str battlemaster so he's either longsword/shield so shieldmaster or using a heavy 2hander in which case as a battlemaster he has access to trip attack.

obviously in this scenario his buddy is ranged, in which case the Distracting Strike manuever does exactly that and it lets you skip the Multiclassing all together

Around level 10 or 11 as a Wizard, I went 3 sessions in a row almost going from full HP to 0 in a single critical attack. In those cases, way our crits work was pretty important imo.

Yes, I often do this when I play wizards.
Fire Bolt specifically states it ignites oil, and oil says that when it ignites on a creature, it "If lit, the oil burns for 2 rounds and deals 5 fire damage to any creature that enters the area or ends its turn in the area. A creature can take this damage only once per turn. "

So, it does pretty good damage if you hit with the flask. I recommend having your familiar from Find Familiar pour the oil on an enemy (it doesn't count as an attack because it's using an item)

First of all, you're using the literal weakest class in terms of HP as a counterargument. Second, you're going to have to be more specific about what you were fighting, because if you're talking CR 11 monsters, there's only one that can do the average 63 damage it'd take to reduce you to 0 in a single attack - the Rhemoraz. So unless you're talking "one multiattack", which would come closer to proving my point than yours. Alternately, your DM uses higher CR monsters or pretty much only the ones with single, big attacks, which would skew the data.

Whats the correct way to orchestrate a "you were meant to lose" encounter?
My players are trying to kill this rich guy and have fucked it up on basically every level. They forged (incorrectly) a letter telling him to meet somewhere and my intent is basically "guards show up youre now in this guys dungeon" but I dont want it to feel like an automatic loss.

if you figure that your players would actually have the wherewithal to recognize impossible odds and surrender, you can just surround them with too many guards and have the guards demand their surrender. I wouldn't count on them doing that though most groups lean towards rolling initiative no matter the apparent odds. they might even be expecting you to bail their asses out with a deus ex machina...

if you're okay with them losing in combat, just start off with a difficult but winnable fight, but every time they down a guard he gets replaced with a reinforcement guard and repeat until surrender (unlikely) or tpko (guards nonlethal your players, they wake up in the dungeon)

You're basically suggesting that your fist tells you that you're about to kill them from the future or something and then you can suddenly decide to not kill them when your fist is already through their ribs.

If you were deciding this before damage when you hit on your attack, your line of reasoning might make more sense.

That and D&D kinda makes telling the CR of a humanoid foe kinda tricky. 'A guy in armour with a sword' could be easily anywhere between 1 and 20.

Not only that, the extra damage doesn't work well with GWM because the -5 to hit from that is essentially a multiplier that means that +1.33 will do less damage on average because that +1.33 is less likely to hit.

Defense can make it twice as hard for an enemy to hit you if your AC is high enough. Or do absolutely nothing if your AC is so low everyone can hit you anyway.
Defense is good in the sense that it doesn't matter what weapons you're using.

Archery is the best fighting style though if you don't have melee features like paladin's smite.

Which is next to impossible under normal circumstances. Anyone with a class that gets a fighting style (Ftr, Pal, Rgr) should have at least a 13 AC, bare minimum - that's if you take Leather for starting armor and have a 14 dex. If you don't have 14 dex, you should be taking the heavier armors in the starting packages anyway. Monsters with a +13 to hit, which would be where the Defense style makes no difference, don't start showing up until CR 11+, at which point your armor and/or Dex will be better as well (at least 16 AC with studded leather and 18 Dex).

Point is, Defense style will never be unhelpful in any reasonable circumstance. And don't undersell the importance of high-AC improvements. Like you said, "making it twice as hard to hit you if your AC is high enough" translates to half as much damage taken over the course of an adventure, which is a huge difference.

Pretty much. Defense style is a boring option but it will always be effective. The other styles are too situational for the most part and/or too weak. Archery and Dueling are pretty gud though, for similar reasons of they're pretty much always effective.

How do you guys feel about thematic elements that don't necessarily follow the rules?

For example; the party(level 8) is sneaking up on 2 bandits. Instead of rolling for initiative and going as normal. The ranger of the group silently buries an arrow between the eyes of the first bandit. While the powerful fighter charges forward, the hastily fired shot of the enemies shortbow bouncing off his gleaming armor, before impaling the hapless vagrant on his sword. I don't do this for every fight, even ones the ocs should clearly win, but sometimes I think it's cool to give the players a cinematic spotlight in challenges they really had no chance of failing.

Secondary question, how do you treat perception rolls in your game? Mine inevitably turns into everyone rolling for perception because they saw the ranger roll a 14 and fail

You're correct. The rules, as written, cause a causality problem. However, like lots of rules in 5e, it exists for the sake of simplicity. In older editions, like 3.5, the player could elect to deal nonlethal damage at any time, but had to declare it before the attack, and took an attack penalty to do so. If they still hit, the attack did all its damage, but it was considered "nonlethal" damage. Once a target's accumulated nonlethal damage equaled their current HP, they were knocked out.

However, you'll notice that this means the enemy is defeated at exactly the same time - when total damage dealt to it exceeded its HP. It was always just a player's choice to deal nonlethal damage. So rather than make the DM track two different kinds of damage for what amounted to the same thing, 5e just eschews it and says "sure, when you get them to 0, you can just choose to KO them". Honestly, I prefer the simplicity here.

If you prefer a set of house rules that treats this more "realistically", then go for it, but I'd counter that there's no "realistic" way to knock someone out without risking killing them. Actually causing someone to lose consciousness from injury means a concussion, and usually a severe one. That always carries a severe risk of complications and death. D&D (and movies and TV) already abstract this since it doesn't have a "pain" system where a creature will stop fighting before dying if they're injured enough (which is how real fights proceed). But who's to say this level of abstraction is the "right" one versus 5e's method?

During your travel, you encounter a crazy knight errant you've met before, a weird potion seller who sells mystery potions, a pair of adventurers who want to share stories, you make a stop at a town you've been to before to see some people, you come across a magical bard that plays for you if you pay him, you come across a sideshow like troupe who have a Chimera that broke out of it's enclosure and want you to help them find it, and in a town you sleep in on your way, there is a mysterious haunted spot in town that secretly hosts a vengeful banshee

1) For something relatively minor like the two guards you describe, I'd say: if you like it and your players like it, do it and have fun. While the situation COULD surprise you (maybe the guard gets REALLY lucky and gets away to sound an alarm), it probably won't, so it's just a question of your and your group's preferences about the cinematic aspect.

2) That sort of situation is where I'd recommend using their passive Perception. It's what it's there for. Some groups are good about not using the metadata of a "failed" Perception roll to start looking around, but it's not an easy expectation to have of your players. So I'd just rely on their Passive for this.

I don't do it all the time though, there have definitely been "Oh I sneak up to him and kill him!" moments where I have to go "nah that wouldn't kill him, you get in a surprise attack but after that you're rolling initiative"

It's not really a bad system because it doesn't discourage people from trying to settle things more peacefully, even if it does mean it isn't much of a challenge to restrain someone (or is it? ranged combat is strong, and this requires melee and you don't know when they'll hit 0) and it's kinda silly.

I wouldn't actually go against it unless someone has really set up their attack for a kill, GWM and smites into the ground on an enemy that has clearly already been described as barely capable of even breathing anymore. But players don't really do that and then expect non-lethal anyway.

An old trick from 4th edition, the Skill Challenge allows for exactly what you if you mess with the structure a bit.

Normally, when there's a minor force that isn't really deadly I allow unique uses of skills, feats, tools, abilities, spells,anything you can be proficient with really to circumvent what could otherwise be bogged down with initiative, combat, and a slew of other unescessary dice rolls

Yes occasionally a hapless moon can get lucky and kill a PC, but that threat shouldn't exist in every single fight at the while of the fickle dice God's.

The important thing to realize is this is a storytelling issue, not a game issue. If the quest hook taking you to the city has time as a factor, the distractions on the journey will not be as welcome. Similarly, if the reason we're going to the city is the plot is reaching a climax, then tension-breaking sidequests will not be satisfying.

If you're interested in making the journey a part of the adventure, what I'd try to aim for is this: rather than set the plot hook as "Travel to Cityburg and stop the cultists from summoning the demon", instead set the plot hook as "Brother Matthias has requested you come to Cityburg. He says he has a job for you. It's important and the reward is good".

Obviously tweak that to your liking, but the goal is to create a sense of "Yeah, I want to get to Cityburg to do that quest" while NOT creating a sense of "we can't stop to kill that chimera, we need to get to Cityburg!"

For years I used wizards maps from various modules. I put them in a poster frame and used dry erase on the "glass" to customize. I had a spare with a plain grid. Had about 6 location maps and the plain grid for custom stuff.

Recently (*a year ago) I switched to plain whiteboard and dry erase. No demarcation. I miss the tone of the preprinted maps but they all have grids so they are useless to me now.

If you want to make cheap grid based maps and tile sets the arts and crafts stores sell easel sized 1" grid graph paper. It's cheap and you can make anything from tablesize to cutouts.

Flanking isn't bad, what's bad is being able to walk around a target without provoking attacks of opportunity. 5 foot step was a better rule and made flanking make sense.

Chaotic Evil is really the only one I'd say can't truly work. NE can realize the benefit of working with the party and not fucking them over while still being pretty fucking selfish, and LN can work for a hired mercenary who is bound to work with the party. Yes i know i can't cast while raging, I am just honestly sick of being a purely combat oriented guy. So if I cast spells out of combat, or cast stuff that can be brought into combat... or even before I rage, it'll be all good (Yes i also know i can't concentrate while raging).

Thinking like... detect magic (nobody in my groups take it anymore), light (no darkvision for dragonborns), vicious mockery (never know when it might come in handy), after that I dunno.

i plan on shooting lore bard since swords/valor is a moot point, the extra spells from anywhere sound nice, and bardic inspiration/cutting words can be used while raging.

I have the Light cantrip and the rule is I have to make successful Arcana checks and spend 2 hours a day for 5 days as well as 30gp in components to enchant one ball bearing. We had a long period of downtime at one point which is where most of them came from. That was a fuckton of rolling.

A giant currently has far, far more issue than they should just fighting some guards.
With flanking, the giant should be hiding in a hole in the ground all day in fear that little men with swords will come and assrape them in public.

Am I reading it wrong, or is long Death monk pretty much the infernal pact of monk subclasses? The temp hp seems to function similarly, and the capstone's both do a potential truckload of damage.

It's a shame temp hp doesn't stack, because MC dipping as a monk/Warlock would be pretty cool, if a bit MAD.

Bought 2 rolls of flip chart paper with 25mm squares. Markers won't bleed through it and good for either detailed or quick-and-dirty battlemaps. And they're so big that I can draw a minimum of 250 battlemaps out of em.
