I'm hesitant to play a female character at our table, mostly because I can't differentiate it from me with a voice (mine is too low and gruff, not gonna make everyone cringe by mimicking a female voice). Should I just say, "she says <so and so>"?

Friend argued that Artificer's design (namely their infusions creating temporary magic items) does in no way fit into the Forgotten Realms and the design philosophy behind the class clashes immensely with the rarity of magic items in the setting.

I argue that infusions are not much different in nature to an Eldritch Knight, Arcane Archer or Hexblade applying magical properties to/with their weapons or ammunition and that clockwork beings like the robo-dog Battle Smith gets or the magical turret Artillerist summons are all well represented things in the Realms as well.

Who's more or less correct?
Also, in case he 100% is: a reflavor of Artificer as an elementalist or fey mage infusing equipment and items with elemental/fey magic instead (Steel Defender as a rock/root elemental, Eldritch Cannon as a miniature fey/elemental/arcane ward shooting projectiles, Armorer wearing rock/root armor). Decent idea for settings entirely without artificing technology?

I'd be inclined to agree. Don't really care about any of the DnD lore and my DM
uses a homebrew setting but just uses FR cosmology and pantheons, and even I can't bring myself to play a full magitech artificer. IMO anywhere that isn't Eberron or a setting based on it they need a bit of reflavour.

I have one on the back burner that I've flavoured as a "unique" type of wizard. He's far less powerful than regular wizards but his powers come with little study and he can only channel them through certain objects. Infusions are magic he channels into particular items whereas all spells are gonna be reflavoured as him bringing out a focus he designed specifically for that spell.

Most of them unfortunately. It's weird because I was all about it back in other editions but was constantly frustrated with the idiotic hoops you would have to jump through, but now that they're simple and easy my interest has passed. At this point if it's not in the PHB I can't be bothered.

Mechanically? Not a lot.
Villainous actions are a merger of the two. You only get one per round and each round the action is "amped up."
The whole idea is to make a singular monster more of a challenge for the players rather than throwing a Horde or a very high CR at them.

I'm 50/50 about the whole process though.

Have you checked the balance on these? There's an excel spreadsheet called "detect balance" you can Google that's designed to help balance homebrew races, and even helps compare them to pre existing ones. It's not 100% accurate but it's pretty good. I'm asking because they already seem a little feature heavy.

Not if you want to do damage. Even if you take tavern brawler you're still outclassed by a farmboy with a stick. Even monk are shit for damage but they can at least attack for days. You could go ancestral guardian and just focus more on pulling aggro

To be fair that rarity is baked into the adventures and written in the DMG, which is not meant for Faerun exclusively. That said, even at the highest tier, artificers can't make gear that exceeds their own level. They cap out at rare magic items, and their limit on infused items rarely fits the whole party with gear.
As for temporary items, forge clerics can make armor better and such so there are cases for class infusion-like abilities, sure.
They don't "fit" but they certainly don't break it either.

In general, spells that take an action to cast are really not worth it unless you can cast them before a fight starts (10 minute + duration), or you have nothing to do the first turn of a fight. A lot of those type of buffs should be done by other casters. But if your casters are stingy or non-existent, then go for them.

With the Class Features your fists can deal 1d8, and you can get your fist up to 1d6+1d4 by grappling a target, which is actually very comparable with a maul. Combined that with the same UA's restraining attack for Battlemaster and you got a semi-decent build!
Obviously will have to work with your DM in order to find gear suitable to this build down the road.

Generally, just reflavoring bludgeoning weapons to fists is 99 percent of the time easier then 'actually using fists' - but fists are decent if you use UA!

Because the NPC will hire others if the PCs don't hurry it up.

It's a competitive market. If you want to get started, you've got to be prepared to dig and take risks. The players should be the one seeking the job, because the guild master recommends it, or something like that. If the players then spend several long rests fucking about instead of getting the dungeon cleared then, yes, some other group will come in, wipe the monsters and take all the rewards for themselves.
This also means that if the players get incredibly fucked they can dig in and stake it out until help arrives.

Posting late because, yes, time pressure is important.

I have a build for this, but I haven't hand the chance to play it yet. Basically, what I observed when I played barbarian was that a lot of the damage came from modifiers rather than damage die, so it's theoretically possible to just punch shit all day long and still do good damage. 1d4+5str+4rage is still an average of 11 damage, so the biggest problem late game comes with resistantance. If your DM is willing to work with you, he might throw you some magical brass knuckles or something, and if they're +anything your average goes up by that amount, and if you go zealot you get to use your feature to extra damage on the first attack of each turn.

I think, especially with warcaster, that haste is totally worth it. That way you're not relying on someone who probably doesn't have as much CON or proficiency in CON saving throws to hold onto your buffs. You also free up their concentration to focus on a debilitating debuff or field control.

None of those weapons are really that great. Polearms, hand crossbows and spears trump them usually.

Maul is the best 2d6 weapon, not that 2d6 weapons are incredibly meta, greataxe is the only 1d12 weapon for crit builds.
Rapier is basically just a direct upgrade of a longsword.
Handaxe's only notable feature is that you can use them for two weapon fighting with simple weapons with strength, 1d6, instead of the 1d4 daggers have. So, basically, you need to want to use weapons but you only have simple weapons proficiency??? The thrown property does give them a slight benefit, because if you threw shortswords it would deal 1d4 not 1d6 damage, but yeah, that barely fucking matters.

This is generally true, same with greater invisibility, and it's why I put them in my list. One of the things to bare in mind though is that casting haste in battle is a 2 turn damage loss, and you won't see actually see an overall damage increase until round 4. Obviously, there's a lot more to haste than just damage. But it's something worth noting. Compare it to Melf's Minute Meteors, which can easily be cast before battle starts, and then just lets you straight add damage as a bonus action each round. As a fighter, not taking the attack action is a pretty big deal as far as group DPR goes, so focusing on spells that can easily be cast before battle, or used on bonus actions and reactions, simplify the decision making process immensely. Still, Haste and GInvis are so good I wouldn't leave home with out them.

Do you guys do voices with running games, or do a voice for your character when playing?
Now that my group has transitioned to online I've been trying to do voices, and now everyone playing is starting to occasionally do voices when they do dialogue. My Goblin voice has ended up sounding like a mix between Kermit and Nathan Fielder though

i played a gadgetsmith with power gauntlets, was fairly powerful but way more fun than normal artificer
the class has a level of depth that is unusual for official 5e material, but it seems to be one of the more balanced homebrews out there

So my main thought on the Wizard and wisdom stemmed from the weird overlap between Int and Wisdom. Most intelligence saves are either mental reason or noticing that an illusion is fake. But apart from investigation, most of the "observe shit and reason things out" skills are in Wis. Meanwhile, someone who is wise is someone who has a lot of knowledge and good judgement, yet most of the knowledge checks are in int. So the thought was that the two abilities should have a bunch of their skills swapped, and Wizards are still wise and knowledgeable. Still, it's mainly just a bunch of idle sandwich making thoughts, and I'd never fuck with this system that badly.

The one mistake I make and see others make is giving a character you didn’t plan for a distinctive voice that you end up making a recurring character - and the voice is hard to replicate or do for long stints or you forget it next session.

You'll be better at whatever subclass you pick does best, but bards are still better at skills, healing, support, debuffs, and just about everything else. It's got way more to do though compared to WOTC artificer, there's more to sink your teeth into compared to Ebberon's version. Mind I've only seen Gunsmith and the Iron Man one in play, so the others could be broken as all hell for all I know but my reading of it was fine for the kind of games I run (high-power, high-magic games where the players are the main characters and do exceptional things, usually starting at level 5 or higher).

One problem might be the Thundersmith: maybe it's meant for multiclassing though? Basically it's got some rules changing how extra attack works with it... but it doesn't get extra attack.
Their railgun's kinda neat though, reminds me a lot of Cygnar Storm Teams.

I had a concept for a sorcerer rework where they have a pool of dice instead of spell slots, and a set of "concepts" instead of spells. Using the parameters set by concepts, they can "invent" spells that use those dice for damage, healing, or other effects, and spend as many from their dice pool as they want on any given spell, amplifying power and increasing potency of effects.

Because they could easily burn through resources, they got some limited short-rest replenishment and some weapon and armour proficiencies. It was by no means functional, but I thought it could make for a more unique caster.

I try to, but I'm riddled with anxiety and I'm constantly worried I won't be able to do it consistently. I mostly try to just lower my voice, since that's way easier to do consistently. Make your own, it's what I do as a GM. Playtest it. Also, as i've said I literally made a homebrew that is outdone by Paladin + Unarmed Fighting Style, and honestly Pugilist is useless now that the UA is out. If you want a Pugilist, play Fighter and go Brute with the UA Unarmed style. Prepare to dunk on everyone except magical enemies. Also, WOTC's printed content is stronger than most homebrew; Hexadin exists, Bard exists. You can even multiclass Hexadin into Swords or Valor Bard if you want to go full bullshit.

Nothing wrong with this if your group's down for it. My group's a bunch of weebs so the fact I have weebshit races in my settings and stuff like magic railguns and rifles isn't that bad. When you're making homebrew, my guidelines are:

You can do combat playtesting solo, pull up Kobold Fight Club and run the class solo through combat against enemies of an appropriate CR for a Deadly encounter, level by level. If you curbstomp, look at why and nerf it. If you get obliterated, look at why and buff it. If you only do slightly better or slightly worse, it's good. Repeat. For roleplaying stuff, you can probably use module encounters or ask a friend to help you create some stress testing scenarios.
>Start underpowered
Aim low with features. It's easier to make things incrementally better than it is to pull back something too powerful.
>Make sure it fills a niche
Either something not in 5e or something you can't do without a 3+ class multiclass (if it's a class) or a unique flavor/mechanical crunch if it's a race that fits a setting you're working on. A lot of the classes in 5e have a bit of overlap when subclasses come up, but you should avoid a Wizard/sorcerer situation.
>Make sure it fits the tone
mostly for GMs making races, make sure the races fit the tone of the setting - after all, that's why you're making homebrew races in the first place.
>Make sure it's fun
It should have enough crunch to be enjoyable to play, but enough fluff that roleplayers can get just as much out of it as rollplayers. That's my issue with Wizard; it has no fluff and too much crunch.

Fine and dandy but what's in the book doesn't work for everyone, either in tone or in function. 5e's strength is its modularity. It's easy to make new rules, races, or classes for if your brain isn't half rotted through by /tg/ shitposting. If there's something you want that isn't there, you can make it there without much effort, especially as a GM.

I remember the CW-Samurai (I mentioned it earlier too in passing), or the original monks and rogues. I remember the Clerics and Druidzillas, and how my GM and RL table at the time scoffed at Warlocks and Soulknives as 'broken bullshit OP' even though we averaged like two encounters a day even in dungeons, none of which ever lasted more than a round.

I'll never deny there's complete bullshit in homebrew... but there's complete bullshit in 3pp, in 1pp, and if 2pp was a thing it would be in there too. But over the years, when it comes to every edition of D&D since 3rd, I've found a lot more balanced stuff by folks online than in any hardcover.

Or if you've got more range you pronounce clear enough to seemingly always be understandable, which is probably ideal. Though personally I'm all for not always being able to make out what a voice is saying just because it's creepy or aggressive.

Try and think more from the guise of your character. I had the same problem, but once you start to really get into the brain of your character and think through their sitty prefabricated brain, you can actually get really indepth. Try that. To make it easier, have the character have facets from your life so you can relate. Like Arachnophobia or some shit like that.

I can relate, I was pretty tense doing any vocals because I live with two flatmates and I was worried they'd hear me because my room is right next to the lounge. One of them did come in to ask me something and I was sitting there with a vocal mic in hand doing a weird Kermit voice ecstatic because they'd just taken down the bard.
Anyway my advice is don't worry about it, people are always more impressed by the confidence to do it rather than the quality. Just think if you entered your sisters room and she was holding an audix f50 and doing her best Ron Perlman lich voice even though it was pretty bad you'd think she was the coolest.

What level do they get mist form? Compare it with Gaseous Form a 3rd level spell and determine from there, if it worked like regular caster races I'd say it getting access to it at 5th would be A-OK.

Unearthed Arcana playtests added a few more. But IIRC PC Minotaurs are in the official now as of Ravnica and PC Centaurs are going to be added in the NOT!Greece module or I could be missing something and they are already in.

Centaurs were in Ravnica too. I have my own homebrew version with subraces that I use instead - mostly because when I make custom settings I like giving players more variety - but the GGR version is pretty solid.

He really needs that ASI for 18 Con 16 Int, but if he's not fussed about the Con he could grab Observant, Keen Minded or Linguist and Resilient CON. He'd lose out on 18 int at 8th, but Resilient Con is amazing and the 3 +int feats are nifty.

Not saying this is the best way to go, but it'd be interesting at least. A sturdy learned wizard that's not a tank, but understands the necessity of defending himself.

Resilient Con might be worth it if you plan to concentrate a lot. Hobgoblins are also good for what you seem to be looking for, so you might want to look at them too.

Metal armor is fluff that most DMs will handwave or easily refluff without a thought. You're kind of locked into some sort of nature aesthetic, you literally draw magic from Nature, but you don't have to be a dirty deranged forest hobo with bird shit in your beard.

Help all. There's a evil cult burning elves at the stake in my game, I'm just level 3 and the head of them are hunting me specifically. We got one disguise from a bounty hunter and I'm sure either I can hide in it, or one of our teammates can and "capture" me.

Oh, and one of the party just got burned to death said stake. The other is just in the crowd right now.

My own Lawful good self doesn't like to see the elves get burned to death. But currently as level 3, I got no idea how to...actually do that.
