I'm an unironic fan of the whole classic JRPG archetypes i.e. Hero, Demon King, and all the trappings of the old console RPGs.
What system do I use for that?

Are you looking for a game with a single main character, or a Final Fantasy style game where you have 3-4 party members?

It's a group game, so the latter, yeah. Possibly with the PCs being the Warriors of Light, I've been playing a lot of Stranger of Paradise recently.

"Fabula Ultima" is designed around this concept specifically. I haven't gotten to play it, but I've read through it a bit, and at first glance it seems like a pretty good representation of it.

I have no problem with destined chosen ones but something about the way japan likes to label HERO as an actual class just bugs me.

I see the HERO class as permission to make his PC the designated sufferer of the game. Heroes get a heroes journey after all. That means a descent into the underworld arc. I'll tell you when you're finished.

Fabula Ultima is pretty good, if you want something SNES FF-like
FFRPG4e is janky but fun
Sword World could be something to look into too, as there's a decent translation now.
I am not sure about Arianrod existing in English, but it's good to look into, especially if you want weirder JRPG feel.

It's descended from the AD&D ranger class IIRC. Dabbles in multiple types of magic rather than relying on pure sword skill, gets bonuses for fighting larger opponents, and gets a version of the fighter's leadership ability which also extends to monsters.

With some influence from the manga The Adventure of Dai, where the protag (on top of being a Hero in the class sense) had draconic blood and the ability to channel spells through his sword, being a legendary warrior constantly reborn in order to preserve the balance of the world or rather, he's the half-human son of the *actual* reincarnating dragonblood guy; the real one joined the villains after humans became afraid of him and killed his wife.
