There are two common Internet discourses regarding Japanese music, both polar opposites of each other:
>hurr durr juhpahn makes da best music, superior to everything else, they make better hip-hop, funk, metal, classical, jazz; anything you do juhpahn does better >umm, ackshually, jap music is overrated weeb slop that just copies from the west
I like a good amount of Japanese music, mainly symphonic/power metal like Versailles, X Japan, and Linked Horizon, along with some composers like Yoko Shimomura and Joe Hisaishi. Aimer and Kalafina are also somewhat kino. Some things I don't like in some Japanese songs are the overt kawaii aesthetic or a couple male singers sound nasally like those emo post-hardcore male singers. As for how different or better it is to western music, it depends on the genre.
>anime, vidya osts, mainstream modern rock and pop Yeah, I'm giving the edge to Japan, though I still enjoy some things west created. I'll also give Japanese male rock/metal musicians for actually being /fa/ rather instead of fat guys wearing cargo shorts and black band shirt. I also like Japanese women wearing beautiful, elegant dresses.
>metal, 80s, bluegrass, jazz Not that much of a musical difference, I observe aside from some subtleties that are subjective preferences or whatever funny gimmick a certain Japanese musician is doing.
Either way, I don't find any Japanese musician that can replace my favorite Western or non-Japanese artists, nor vice versa.
