Increased accessibility via simplifying personal technologies (laptops, smartphones) is done for pragmatic and ultimately corporate purposes. A wider active userbase generates more revenue through advertising, commerce and datamining. The prevalence of smartphones in particular has led to massive pockets of users being coagulated into "walled-gardens" (social media) for, again, profiling, datamining and adverts. Consequently, the web has paradoxically grown larger (in users) but significantly diminished in diversity of traffic (all allocated to top sites or even apps).

As for the culture, I could only describe it as being 'gentrified'. Wouldn't want to step into "reeee normies" territory.

I'm not too keen on latest technologies, but I could only suspect a further push in integrating real life and internet - IoT or VR if you will.

a lot of people actually use the voice channels and despite selling the info you textpost there to advertisers, it's probably the fastest free server voip right now and that's a major upside that I can see a lot of people liking, but as >>2328719 says there's a lot of issues with it
considering plenty of people were and are still using the bloatfest programming ad joke that is skype, it's really not surprising that discord blew up so well

Why is any mention of "that elementary particle in the same group as the photon" being censored? Even just saying it has warranted post deletion for something like a week now. I can understand kicking people from IRC if they're going to spam the channel, but this has been going on on /qa/ too for quite a bit longer now.
