I think it's unfair to associate such low people with a content that authors of these pictures include in them (excluding 3dpd). Only their disgusting behavior corrupts everything. Can't say anything about reddit and other sites on those pics because i don't browse them.

Alexios Philanthropenos, a mostly forgotten byzantine general (he lived during one of the less interesting times of the empire).

The thing about being a byzantine general, is it was often a bit of a double edged sword. If you got too popular you would be seen as a threat, and in byzantine society it was considered fairly normal (though not openly admitted) for the emperor pre-emptively knock down anyone who was getting too strong. The popular way was blinding them in one or both eyes (the byzantines believed you needed good eyesight to rule, because they were a society which existed metaphysically) since that would make them unfollowable.

To avoid this or other fates you had basically two options. One was to be super long term best friends with the emperor, not outlive him, and hope he isn't secretively the paranoid type all along anyway. This was generally a bad strategy. The second was to simply never draw too much attention to yourself. Dont over-perform, do good, be maybe even above average, but dont ever become a celebrity.

Well alexios happened to be renown and well known as being quite capable as a commander, so things were looking bad for him. Perhaps his cunning made him escape any severe punishments and simply retire. Not much is really known, other than he seems to suspiciously not show up in official record as much as you would think, and he was dirt poor. Perhaps a campaign to make him 'go away' was carried out.

At any rate, another peculiarity of byzantine society is that a general doesn't ever fully retire. They are always there if needed, and strangely, even ones who have received such treatment generally tend to continue aiding the empire if required.

So it came to be that one day some mohammadans were besieging a walled city belonging to the empire. This was not the most important of positions, they probably just wanted to loot it, and the army was already spread thin.. so the emperor just told alexios, now a beggar, to handle it.

It is doubtful that the emperor did not understand this predicament, and probably did not expect the old general to manage anything, likely simply sending the order so he could say he allocated an asset to relieve the town and then if things go wrong its not his problem. Alexios, however, had other plans.

Calling in what ever old favors he could muster, he managed to purchase a donkey. This donkey was the entierty of his army. Its main quality was that it could follow roads, which was important since alexios was mostly blind (by age apparently) at this point.
And so the old blind general set off towards the city to lift the siege.
The mohammadins, upon being made aware of this development, withdrew from the siege and the city was saved. Some say they did so out of respect, others say he was so renown at the time just knowing he was coming to try and do something made them decide not to risk him actually coming up with a plan en route. But either way, general alexios philanthropenos single handedly (with the help of one donkey) saved a besieged walled city. Now you know.
