I'm not exactly sure if this is appropriate for this board, but it is a convention related question so hopefully the anons here will have some insight.
I'm going to be going to Anime Expo. It's not my first con, and it's not even the first time that I've been to AX in particular. The thing is, I don't really feel like I've been getting the most out of my convention experiences. I am a fan of anime (though I'm into video games moreso) but I mostly just attend to hang out with my other friends who are going and in the end I feel like it's just an expensive way to hang out with people I could see any time.
But I keep seeing people talk about how much fun they have at cons, what a magical experience it is for them. I hear people who talk about meeting people who become lifelong friends at cons. And I want to understand that. This is the last year I'll be able to go to a con for a while thanks to my new job, and I really want to make the most of it.
So how do I really get the most out of my con experience? I'm really shy but I'd like to make this year count and try to have fun in a way different from just hanging out with my friends like usual, maybe even meet some new people. But I just don't understand how.
