Tryharding because you desperately want to 'make it' to serve your narcissistic needs will never succeed, and that is the very approach that leads to the need to 'finish' songs.
I learned this a long time ago with practicing piano where I had the inner urge to finish pieces to move to the next one. It was a major realization and the one thing that made it possible for me to get to a professional level: you don't finish something and move on. You build a repertoir, a pool of stuff you learned, and when you learn something new, you can go back to it and refine it and it continues like that for the rest of your life.
When you have done this for some time and reached a certain level you WILL finish stuff, you will have pieces that you can perform and you will have produced tracks you're proud of and you can maybe even place.
But if that's your goal to begin with you will fail with 100% certainty.
You can believe it or not. Most aspiring musicians never get it, and that's why most of them never make it. It's not black and white either, the fight againt your narcissism is a life long struggle for every artist.
Just ask yourself, why do you want to make music?

Okay I don’t see why you’re applying the logic of “trying hard and having fun aren’t mutually exclusive” in one situation but “if you’re trying to finish songs that means your motivations are impure and you’re tying too hard at the wrong thing” in another- there’s no logic there, you’re just filling in blanks based on what you assume of other people.

I personally am TRYING to get good and I’m having fun while doing it.
Did finishing songs get easier at some point? No shit, but I practiced the parts of the process that enabled that.
My desire to improve isn’t in any way tied with a desire to “make it,” that’s a completely separate thing.

there is. It's about the intention you have and you need to be brutally honest with yourself.
Why do you finish tracks?
In reality you deprive yourself from the possibility to go back to WIPs and use them as pool to try new techniques. Why would you dub a track 'finished' when there is no need to do so? It's not like you have a deadline or you need to finish it to pay your rent.
I know that it is something that is hard to grasp because it jeopardizes your whole approach and self image of your musician persona.
In the end, most people fail, and that's the reason why.

It literally doesn’t and there’s no reason why that would be better than just doing it in a new project- in fact you’re already locked in to an idea or direction so this makes even less sense

Dubbing a track “finished” means nothing unless you release it, I don’t get why you’re so hung up on this.
Reusing ideas from previous songs is super common anyway.
