Absolutely nuts.” You rub your chin thoughtfully. “Some of it is just paperwork stuff, but I'm not sure anyone can stay mad when she starts in with that -” you remember the way she shut Harder's wrath down with one well-timed crossing of her slender, pale legs - “uh, idol thing.”
“You think she'll do okay?”
“When that air raid hit, I was wheeling her around base. She got her head in the fight faster than I did. Even if she's not cut out for that particular job, I doubt she's going to screw the pooch.” You almost catch yourself on that last one, but Goto's drinking too, and he GAVE you the drinks, so to hell with it. You doubt he'll care, anyway – he's pretty loose for a Japanese guy.
In fact, his propensity for office drinking is the only really Japanese thing about the guy. Or maybe you're ethnocentric and Projecting and you didn't even ask him for his pronouns so who gives a shit? You down another shot. “So why are you trying to get me drunk?”
“I assigned Naka a small command an hour or two ago,” he tells you.
“What, really?”
“Perfect time for it,” he points out. “With the flagship in ordinary, the others will have time to train as a team. Naka doesn't need it; she was one of our first. She's seen enough heavy shit that the training range isn't much use for her. She can still supervise, however.”
“So why are you trying to get me drunk?”
“Trying?” he refills your glass.
You toss it back, and slap it down. “Trying.”
He smirks – and rolls his chair a few inches away from the desk, looking just like he's trying to dodge another of Kongou's dynamic entries. “I assigned Fubuki to her.”

It's been peaceful the last two weeks, as if some omnipresent being has been too distracted to properly fuck with my life. Class numbers are still dwindling, and Sheen's stopped coming to class now too, something about a nervous breakdown. What a pussy.
I shrug, not my problem. I don't get involved in that shit. I check the clock, wondering how long Mr Oniz has been droning on about World War 3. God damn, it's only been fifteen minutes?
"Speltin!" Oniz calls out, "Pay attention!" The one unfortunate thing about most people going missing is that Oniz is starting to notice how much of a lazy shit I am in class.
Of course, Nej and his constant self narration goes unnoticed, the shit.
Oniz starts to ask me a question, too which I have no idea what the answer is, but a saving knock comes at the door. "Greg?"
Marie stands in the doorway, looking curious, "Can I borrow some boys real quick? I need some supplies moved."
Oniz nods quickly, going from pissed off to beaming smiles in moments. "Sure. Speltin, Smackton, go help Ms Gutla!"
Oh god damn it. I stand, Nej following me outside, muttering to himself about some problem he has that I don't care about, still unsure which one of his dullwitted hangers on he likes most.
Christ I hate him.

It's modern day and the Chaos Gang are still kiddos, yet becoming each day more powerful. There is a big, secret prophecy that says that your step sister - Maya, will play a key role in the development of the Emperor - as she is a future shard of Mr. Big E himself. So the Chaos Gods are after her, aiming to corrupt her and turn her to their favor.
They would've completed their plan already by now, if it weren't for a certain obstacle - You. Via the love and positive feelings your sis has for her dear brother, she has managed to endure and surpass their influence until now, subconsciously.
The situation has been manageable so far, however, things are going to change for the worse.
"I don't mind going... But is it okay if I invite one more?" You won't refuse free food, and you also didn't want to leave Mika alone with him.
"Ah are you going to invite Saki-nee?" Mika knew right away who you were asking for.
You nod your head. "Yeah, is it okay if I invite her?" You turn to Ryu to ask the question.
First, he turns towards Mika. Then he turns to you. Right away, as if you could read his mind, you knew he wanted to refuse. However, trying to look good in front of Mika did have it's consequences. "Yeah... Go ahead! Invite her along." It must've taken a lot out of him to agree to it. "Do we need to pick her up somewhere? I have my car parked in the parking lot."
"Oh no." You smile at him. "She is at the staff room. My sister is a teacher here. You probably know her."
It took a while to click for him but when he remembered Saki, a flash of terror can be seen in his eyes. "i-I see... Okay..."
"I'll go tell her that you are going to treat her. If you do know her, she would be thrilled to see a former student!" You grab your wallet on your way out of the clubroom to pick your sister up. However before you get too far you hear Ryu call out after you.
"Hey! Shuichi!" Turning around you ask him what he needed. To your surprise, he starts to ask you if you and Mika were in a relationship. "You aren't Mika's boyfriend right?"
A lot of tabletop fantasy settings have races who live primarily underground, like dwarves, kobolds, gnomes, drow and so on. Forgotten Realms has its Underdark, most fantasy games have dwarves holed up in mountains and goblins emerging from caves to wreak havoc.
I've been thinking about the base assumptions of a lot of this stuff. First, for people to live underground full-time, there's got to be an ecosystem that can support people all the way up to large, people-like omnivores. Typically, cave ecosystems in the real world only support creatures up to the scale of salamanders and centipedes... and in some cases, the majority of the initial biomass comes from bat guano. For underground kingdoms to work, you've got to up the amount of biomass found underground significantly. Mushrooms are detrivores, so they typically need something lower on the scale to piggy-back off of.When you grow mushrooms, you’re using dead trees or manure, you can’t just put it in dirt and expect it to work.
In most fantasy literature, you see dwarves and goblins armed in much the same way you see the humans and elves of the surface. The best historical parallel we have to the kind of war fought underground would be the military mining of of the medieval period. One typical response to tunneling under walls would be to build another tunnel down, and then smoke out the enemy. How do underground kingdoms deal with someone setting large fires at their entrances or gassing them all?
Anyone else put some thought into subterranean races? My big idea from all of this is gas-mask toting kobolds who breed bats in swarms that black out the sky in the area to keep their underground mushroom agriculture functional.
Summer is finally over. Today was your first day back at school and you were back to your normal routine. You were up early like always, cooking breakfast. Your parents died when you were in middle school so you had to move in with your older sister in the city. "I wonder if my older sister is up already... She is going to be late at this rate..." You whisper to yourself as you finish setting up the table. "I should wake her up."
On your way to her bedroom you couldn't help but think how lucky you were to have an older sister like her. She was much older than you, she was almost thirty while you were still in second year high school. You could still remember how awkward it was for her to act all motherly when you moved in back then.
"Saki? Are you awake?" You knock on her door. Your sister just lets out a groan in response to you. "Saki we are going to be late for school! Aren't you doing a speech in the opening ceremonies? Should a teacher really be acting like this?" Trying to talk sense into her ends in futility. Finally you couldn't wait anymore. You go inside her room to wake her up.
Walking up to her you try and gently shake her to wake her up. As soon as you got close enough however, the smell of alcohol hits you. "She must've been up late last night drinking again..." Recently she has been drinking more and more. Was it the pressure of finding a boyfriend and getting married getting to her?
"Saki wake up!" You try and try again until finally she wakes up.
"I-I'm awake... S-Stop being so loud Shuichi..." She grumbles to you as she holds her head in pain. At first she was calm but when she realizes what time it was her eyes widen with shock. "I-It's already this late?! Why didn't you wake me up earlier?!" She immediately jumps out of bed and goes into the bathroom. "Let me get ready real quick and we can walk to school together okay?"
[ ] "Actually, I was going to walk with a friend of mine."
[ ] "Sure." You don't mind walking with your older sister.
