I was considering running a L5R game where the PCs get sent in to the future by an evil sorceror. Time Travel, awesome idea or trope that should be avoided?

Sup, /tg/, i managed to get a few friends to play d&d next week. I've got no experience with d&d and so do they. I downloaded a bunch of 3.5e and 4e books earlier, so could someone give me a list of what books to read?

I'm really excited to read Spear of Macragge and listen to Veil of Darkness on my day off tomorrow. I just know it involved a very pissed off vengeful Sicarius and a vortex grenade based off the Damnos apoc warzone book.
