Afternoon, ladies and gents! Time for today's edition of Ask A Judge! Sorry I wasn't around yesterday; I spent the better part of the day playing Magic with friends, and then we all just hung around watching movies and playing various videogames.
Also, there's a damned good chance I'll be in San Diego this next weekend. Anyone know any shops I should hit up?
So, I'm making a science fiction setting, and I'm starting to think about astrobiology. The setting takes place in the neighbouring galaxy much in the spirit of Freelancer (a group of people fucked off to escape a war and to start anew). I've decided to leave out alien cultures, but I have decided that life is actually quite abudant in the universe, but most of it is primitive microbes and bacteria, and that the leap from single cell to multiple cell organisms is an improbable one, and that alien ecologies as complex and varied as that of earth's are scarce indeed, but there are enough of those that humanity has come to contact with several of them. So now I need ideas for such ecologies, what to incorpoate, some cool ideas to make them feel alien enough and not just go "Well this is a bit like earth 60 millions years ago..." Species both dangerous and useful are more than welcome!
I've got some notes jotted down so far: a species of "plant" that has become the superspecies of its home planet: it has effectively taken over almost every ecological niche of a planet. It is capable of photosynthesis and survives quite comfortably with that. It does, however, feed on proteins as well which, when absorbed, turn the "plant" more aggressive and, in time, even enables growths that resemble neurological clusters, enabling the plants to "hunt" for more meat, becoming stronger and smarter in the process.
I've also written stuff about large, water-dwelling creatures with flat bodies (kinda like rays) that dive out of oceans to feed on lichen-type plants that are extremely light and float in the winds.
What's the point of titans in 40K? If they're that powerful, why are battles not decided by them? I can understand the Imperium not building many with its poor technology, but why wouldn't the tyranids and tau just build a zillion if they're useful?
Anyone know if Mr. Strike Force is still around? I might be ordering some shit soon, and I was wondering if anyone knew if he might be having a Black Friday sale or something. Also, does anyone know if he does Dust Tactics stuff too? I am looking to get me some of that.
I'm opening a /tg/ cafe and I'm looking for some name ideas, I was initially thinking about styling it like a generic tavern with a name like the "Dragon's Claw" but I don't want to commit just yet until I've heard some of /tg/'s awesome ideas.
Last time on Song of Swords, Jimmy spilled the beans on some incredibly badass SoS lore, including the coolest cavalry unit ever, the "Wolf Crusher" Volkodavs, the crossbow-armed gendarmes of Dace, who hunt steppeland bandits on their own turf, and don't afraid of anybody.
Then, we had a dog fight in which a wolf and a caucasian shepherd flung themselves at one another for ten or so rounds in a GURPs battle, and failed to do any significant damage to each other.
