How do I initiate at chess?

I'm being overwhelmed by all the metagame and would like some more experienced players advice on how to proceed.

One of the things that I learned in the hard way is that in the beginner levels I shouldn't bother on memorize openings for that other beginners doesn't play book openings.

Ideas for Creepy Incidents/ Happenings

No.28425642 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
Post short ideas for creepy incidents/ happenings

Examples :

A hiker finds the skeletal remains of a body. The skeleton is intact except for a shattered skull. Forensic examination of the remains shows that the deadly blow came from inside the skull.

The room you are in has a large picture on the wall of the local skyline lit up at night. As you turn to leave the room, out of the corner of your eye, you see a window in one of the buildings go dark.

On certain nights, the mortician in the morgue locks his office door and spends the night praying. He shivers when the scraping noises pass by his door. He never looks for the bodies that disappear.

You are walking somewhere familiar; maybe up your own driveway. You glance across your yard and you see someone standing inside a window watching you. There is no house connected to the window. When you realize this and look back the window is there just long enough for the person inside to pull the blinds shut.

Walking on a crisp autumn morning, you happen to be looking at a tree across the street when you hear a brittle snap. In less than a minute’s time, every single bright yellow leaf from the maple falls to the ground, all at once.

Hello elegan/tg/entlemen,

I'd like to hear your thoughts on a particular kind of RPG. I'm imagining it played over a forum/email for convenience, as it would effectively be several simultaneous 1-on-1 sessions with a common GM.

Basically, let's consider completely broken powers. Drawing inspiration from weeaboo material, it could be like the Death Note - killing someone at any range, but you have to know their face and name. Or like Geass - you look someone in the eye and can force them to do your bidding. No saving throws, no magical shielding, no nothing. If the prerequisities are met, it happens, and clever use of such power can put another player out of the game instantly.

Now, let's imagine that each player has a unique power of this kind, and for some reason (like pic related's "kill every other player to become God") they want to be the last man standing. They, however, have no idea about the in-game identity of other players, and they communicate with each other only through the GM. I'm imagining it in a modern setting, but that's not really important.

So basically, it's a cross between a regular RPG and something like Mafia - you have to outwit and possibly manipulate your opponents, and the GM is the arbitrator who creates the intervening world.

This is a concept that popped into my head today, and the possibilities seem too amazing not to try it. So the question to consider - what setup (setting, ways for players to interact etc) and powers would provide interesting gameplay? Also, is there any existing game that tries to do this kind of thing?

Tau Space Marines

would Space Marines ever turn renegade and fight for the Tau Empire? After all, if Space Marines would turn traitor and become Chaotic or turn renegade, why wouldn't they turn to the Tau if they felt they had no choice?
