I got a recurring 1 week a month job with a client on my first proposal on upwork, made about $5k since March.
Since then I've sent about 20 other proposals, even on stuff I perfectly match with, and haven't gotten a single reply.
If you have a job or another way to pay the bills, it's not too hard to set up an rss feed of jobs and just reply to a couple proposals a week that seem interesting. It may take awhile before things start moving, but you can do it while you're fucking around watching youtube.
Just stay away from the obvious "build me a facebook" or "we're looking for someone in the third-world to pay $4/hr to devlop our DB" type idiots
