So how did 4chan promote itself in the earliest days?

I originally got here from a tangentially related otaku website (DDRFreak) back in 2004/2005 and the place was already known as a pretty seedy place among the people on that board who already knew what it was.

The more I read about other startups, the "if you build it, they will come" is provable bullshit. The place went down a couple times, but obviously it was popular enough even at the time to justify coming back, unlike places like 5chan
