True, but it'll be at least another year or 2 until FreeSync takes off. Not many manufacturers are going to jump on the band wagon with DP 1.2a when DP 1.3 is right around the corner. From what I've read it's also not as easy as throwing on DP 1.3 and doing a firmware update. Some hardware testing and implementation is required.

With VESA support I'm hopeful it will take off in a big way.

Freesync is definitely not just doing a firmware update. It just requires a little redesign of the existing hardware.
The point is that it doesn't require a proprietary freesync module that adds like $50 to the manufacturing cost. You have to have a little cost to redesign your monitor (you'd be doing this anyway), but the actual manufacturing costs are the same.

That and intel. Intel GPUs make up most of the market (office PCs...), so expect new iterations of the intel IGPs to support freesync. Intel is pretty good at adding things that no-one can use yet, like TSX.

It's incorrect to say that preference of FOSS software is a requirement for anyone in the cs field, rather it's a requirement of anyone who understands computers well enough /and/ wants a little more out of them. I've known many people in college who were competent programmers, yet prefer closed source programs over open ones.

I fall on the extreme end of FOSS support and usage, and I find it frustrating that others who know as much as I do chose to use non portable, closed programs (mostly development tools and libs). I this irks me to no end because their arguments always amount to either it's shinier, I don't want to/don't care, or yay Microsoft. I would not, however, go as far as saying that they aren't really computer scientists.

NVidia has made a lot of marketing for cuda and my college bought 18 machines great for cuda development. No one cared about opencl at the time except me and one other student. It's the same way for a lot of other non FOSS technologies, though not with the happy ending of open sourcing in the case of cuda. Filtering out marketing drivel isn't easy anywhere.

The people whom I know have done some great things with regards to the tools they all use and it would be a downright insult to call them not real cs people. It's just apathy that keeps them from using FOSS things.

Every single website you visit has potential to share information about your browsing habits and no addon/plugin is going to change that. I believe there is a plugin for Firefox ("Lightbeam"?) that shows a visual web of any requests from 3rd party sites.

Any server is able to log and share your information on a back end service that your browser client will never see.

Simply using the internet is signing a waiver to your privacy. Get over your sense of entitlement, because you're paying to use the physical infrastructure built by the government and companies that you're trying to hide from.

It just take a line an print a ready-to-use obfuscated $(h4x).

You can see all the bad part ($(printf '%s')) is escaped.
The `printf[...]` part writes the input of read and pipes it to od to get an hex representation, sed to turn each couple of hex digit a '\xnn' sequence and get rid of spaces, paste to join all the lines and tr to get rid of the spaces again (because paste replaced newlines by spaces (or tabs, I'm not sure).
