The best things about it were the references to the previous series. Everything else was at the level of and sometimes even less quality than Try. The worst part was how the big reveal at the end of the whole livestream presentation was a recolor of a gunpla that already released because Bandai.

Rewatch Char and Amuros fight. There's lots of punching and beam sabering each other. They both do interesting things with their dummies and funnels. Their inperson fight is cool too, with Amuro rigging up bazookas and trip wires.

Victory gundam involved very creative usage of the modular victorys system and transformations.

G-reco I only watched half of because I didn't personally enjoy it, but it's fights were fine from what I saw. Good mixture of shooting and up close stuff.

Amuro's still a rookie at first. Zeon makes up for it by having to get creative with how they fight the gundam. We've got stuff like Char kicking the Gundam in the guts while in space, or the guncannon pushing a zaku off of a cliff, or the guncannon throwing a rock, or the fucking Zaku Kungfu, or the way Ramba ral blocks off Amuros beam saber.

I'll admit that the fights with the dopps were fucking boring though.

I think the creators said that it could be that big in real space too, though without a source take that with a bag of salt obviously. That said, I imagine it was less that the scale was wonky between universes and more that the scale was relativistic in nature, in that it was as big as needed in the pocket universe they were in. And also as big as needed in the other universe it went in to, so Granzembora's hand was big enough to hold the Earth, but also small enough to make it apparent what he was doing to his opponents. There's no point in grabbing it if his opponent doesn't see it after all. Especially when the whole finale is just a show in dick swinging, with both sides trying to make themselves look bigger and more powerful for much of it, swelling both their egos and robots to do so.

It's really just more of Gainax's normal direction towards dynamic visuals in action at the end of the day however. They just wanted to make a cool scene more than likely and people, both supporters and detractors take it too seriously.

I think /m/ would be less hostile if the collective just embraced the fact that the takeaway from these series are the designs of the suits. Gundam after 0079 wasn't profound in any way, and tomino was already a drug addled depressant then, no gundam director since has been able to catch that lightning in a bottle.

I ignore the shows entirely and focus on the suits I like when I see previews.

People still have fun watching Gundam, y'know? A lot of them are entertaining despite being gunpla advertisements. It's not like people were expecting IBO to be some deep emotional story. It just wasn't fun to watch. And there were hardly any battles along with a very small variety of MS.

nice lies there buddy but Gundam can still be fun. I had fun with G-Reco and GBF, which is 2 out of the last 4 series. Before that there have been good OVAs and Turn A, X, G, and Victory are a fantastic line-up for the 90s. I wouldn't have had fun if I didn't get invested in these series. I was even looking forward to IBO's potential for several episodes. Just because you're too afraid of disappointment doesn't mean I have to be.
