Anyways, opinions. And my opinion is that Code Geass was filled with bad character development (yes even in the first season, you can't blame it all on R2. Poor Kalen), stupid plot points, and stupid twists.

Anything involving the Mao arc was pretty bad. Wall running, "I love you so much I'm going to chop you up with chainsaw and take you to austraila", etc.

I know this will just be swept under the rug with "NO THE SHOW WAS PERFECT TILL R2 HIT!" but even if someone did like the first season, you have to admit that a Thousand Zeroes and all the things people rage about in R2 was paved for since season one when they were pulling equally stupid things like wall running, Australia, table fucking, the stupid "live" thing, Orange, united states of Japan, or any dozen poorly thought out, poorly delivered moments. R2 crap like Geass Cult, Jupiter, Emperor missiles, all this stuff was just following on equally stupid moments from the first season. Kalen and Ouji's character assassinations were built on poor handling they got character development wise in the first season, (not to mention entirely forgotten plot points for character development they they brought up and did absolutely nothing with, like Kalen's mom and her weird addiction)

I won't claim Code Geass was perfect but I get the feeling some of your complaints are either too vague and subjective to argue about (what is bad? what is stupid? etc.) other than going around in circles, or are fairly specific but still based on wanting the show to be much more realistic and serious when over-the-top and silly contents were there from the beginning.

For you that apparently means the series was always stupid or bad, whereas for me it's the opposite: the original series established from early on that realism wasn't a big concern. Exaggerated events and grandiloquent expressions were part of this universe, and that the staff was prone to in-jokes and crazy twists. What's inherently wrong about that? It's part of the experience and the intended reaction.

I also don't agree with what you consider character assassination either, and a few your expectations seem a bit out of line to me (her mother was meant to be part of character motivation, nothing more. It wasn't presented as being integral to the narrative as a whole).

Ergo, what you see as both S1 and R2 being bad, I see very differently.

For me, Code Geass was a trainwreck, and that train wrecked long before r2. For some people it was an enjoyable trainwreck. Some people don't think it was a trainwreck at all. And some people don't think it was enjoyable.

That's fine. For me Code Geass had some elements of a trainwreck at times but the difference is it managed to avoid becoming a real one by mixing in other kinds of content and reaching what I found to be a truly satisfactory ending. So yes, agree to disagree.

I have played and built mecha in Mekton Z for years. I have had problems only in setting, not the rules themselves. I found few people I played with got into character. They played it like a video game or D&D which does not work. Plus mecha without context in a setting don't work or balance. Don't let players build the mecha. Have them do it in game so it's in context of the setting. Book keeping in Mekton is easy if you use the Cinematic build system and streamlined combat rules in the Tactical Display supplement.
