The plot isn’t convoluted though.
Maybe in a first watch it can seem that way, but after rewatching it E7 is very tightly written.
A lot of the seeds for the endgame elements start developing really early on.
The kids also acted like actual kids in this show.
And aside from holland, who develops into a better person around episode 30, the rest of the crew is fine.

I mean, American comics first have certain issues or series as "canon" but then retcon them and say "they aren't canon! they're just partially canon! some of the essence of the events are still there, but are part of a completely alternate reality unrelated to the main multiverse".
