>>18579134I would say that he was a good director in the 80s.
He is one of the few Anime creators that doesn't pander to trends (for the most part), so even his worst shows are nonetheless original.
Although most of his works are war related, he did cover the subject from different perspectives.
While his modern shows do have conceptual consistency and high production values, it seems that he cares about nothing but giving the viewer the most relevant information to progress the plot.
G-Reco probably has the most theatrically utilitarian character dialogues in all Anime.
This could've not been a problem if the presentation was a little bit more subtle.
Tomino's direction was already shifting to the worst in the 90s but with the 2000s he reached new heights and G-Reco is the epitome of his madness.
It doesn't matter if you think that the writing of G-Reco is genius or the worst thing ever.
The camera movement, the perspective selection and the cutting in this show are as if they were crafted by Mister Fucking Bean.
All the tragic scenes became unintentionally comedic because of that. The action scenes seems to be inspired by the drunk Hollywood cameraman that everyone despises. High production values and good intentions would not save crappy camera work. Tomino went downhill as a director.
