Part of the reason for SEED suits looking the way they did in the show is because of the animation director Satoshi Shigeta, and the then new technology of digital animation. You don't see the same design complaints addressed to X or Wing or G Fighter despite Okawara also designing suits for those shows.

All you need is WASD for movement, space to jump, shift for boost, all the complex movement (like punching) would be macro and you would press p to punch.

Is there any disadvantage to this setup?

Single joystick is retarded for mecha, double joystick like RC helicopters, planes, and tanks use would be the best. One stick controls "View" (Turning left and right, tilting up and down) and one controls movement (Forward and backward, right and left, diagonal, etc.). All the control the kbm has with the comfort and feedback of the joystick.

You already have circle strafing IRL with helicopter, when your armor is piss poor, the only escape is mobility, and a mech cannot have as much armor as tank equivalent.

AGAIN, with the input smoothing. Input smoothing is a good general solution for vidya, but what if I want to do a J-turn or correct oversteer? Having to wait for the input smoothing to catch up to the inout level I want = too late. Holy shit you're stupid.

In the end it took fucking senile Tomino to make a Gundam that isn't just derivative shlock, but still do a good ol' sincere "war is bad" message, and it looks beautiful to boot. I want to like this idea. I loved alien isolation, which did something similar and I also enjoyed how the origin manga leaned so heavily into the original series's aesthetics rather than trying to update everything the way most other OYW stories like Kondo's version (and ironically the origin anime) have been doing since War in the Pocket. I'm not even usually a realism fag, I just remember being blown away as a kid by how believable everything felt compared to other giant robot shows like transformers I'd seen before. What I'd really like to see is something that can make today's audiences feel the same way the original made people feel back in the day. Making it too retro might be fun but evoking nostalgia for a bygone era wouldn't draw them into the film's world the same way.
