What do people actually like about NGE? The animation is nice, but the narrative is utter shit. I constantly see people saying it's "metaphorical" and super deep, but nobody gives any specific examples of what it means. I hate throwing this word around, but to me it's incredibly pretentious.

I like the story because the story is a Time loop where shinji no matter what he does he always causes the third impact but at the same time it's a story about a boy trying to find happiness within his own life but he's too stupid to f****** figure out how to attain it. Cuz he likes asuka but asuka ahores him. and then there's Ray who likes shinji but shinji's oblivious to it and then there's also the possibility of him banging handler but he won't take that either because "oh but it's not asuka" so by the end of the movie The end of evangelion when it's just shinji and asuka instead of being happy he stuck with asuka he tries to kill her because "God damn it why couldn't you love me" and then thus creating the time loop when he resets time somehow they because he's some weird God thing or whatever anyway he resets it and somehow everybody's memories have reset it back to before the third impact. Then the Eva reboot series is like the 4th reboot of their universe because shinji can't get anything right.

Well, it certainly looks better than the first design. Overall it seems to be a generic family movie, but some of Robotnik's robots look cool.

I don't know if I necessarily believe the first design was intentionally bad, but I do believe that design was specifically picked so they could go back and make a final, better design. I think that trailer was ridiculous on purpose for exactly the reasons you mentioned.
