*Starlight Glimmer has spent time in Canterlot gathering data on the mane6 from their acquaintances.
*She convinces Moondancer to show her the spells Twilight had suggested she practice for fun.
*She learns of the time travel spell and has Moondancer upgrade it.
*Starlight Glimmer then uses the spell to go far back in time to stop Rainbow Dash from performing the rainboom.
*Because the rainbow never appeared, none of the mane6 get their cutie marks and Spike is never hatched.
*At the same time in the present, the CMC are visiting Twilight to have her examine their newly earned marks because they seem based on friendship magic.
*At the same time, Discord bursts in uninvited and conveniently tests a new spell on the three of them and Twilight that shield them from time being altered.
*In this new timeline they discover that without the mane6 to stop Nightmare Moon, she returns and defeats Celestia, turning her into Nightmare Star.
*Starlight Glimmer attempts to negate both of their powers but is instead subjugated herself.
*No matter which mane6 member Twilight tries to seek out and get them to become the rightful avatars of the Elements of Harmony, she cannot convince them to help her.
*However, the CMC use their talent to help other ponies discover their special talents and thus earn them their cutie marks and recover their power.
*With the help of a CMC-reformed Starlight, the mane6 defeat the Nightmares and use the time loops to travel back to the normal future.
*Twilight then gets Sunset's msg from Canterlot High and travels to the human world as shown in the credits of Friendship Games.
