Could you guys help me get the aforementioned pony lore?

I never watched the cartoon, but i've been looking into various articles on ponypedia, and would appreciate if someone summarized the fandom's history to me. Yes i know that there are ponies and people jerk off to them.

What i wonder about is how the series changed across the seasons. I know that it all started as a kinda traditional cartoon with some references targeted at adults, and i know that it ended with a bunch of generic diversity shit, side products and an entire fanverse, but how did it go from there to here? Was the atmosphere of the episodes changed when trump was elected? Did the characters grow along with the viewers(this went for 10 years, little girls who started watching it grew up)? Anything in the seasons stood out to fans? How were the different seasons received? Did the brony fanbase eventually decline?

Could you elaborate, and maybe reflect upon the ponies for your own sake also?
