I see a lot of posts about malfunctioning games, often times attributed to dirty contacts and hardware. Often times the solution given is to clean the contacts with an alcohol based solution.
YOU SHOULD NEVER CLEAN YOUR CARTRIDGES WITH ALCOHOL
I repair and restore old computer systems, game consoles and accessories a lot. Alcohol may clean the contacts on your cartridges enough for them to work but it corrodes them. The biggest problem is that it's only a temporary fix as it doesn't even clean them that well.
I use Brasso. It's a general use metal polish that won't ruin the circuit board and polish the contacts. You have not truly seen how dirty your games are until you've swabbed them down with a proper precious metal cleaner.
Another cleaner that you can use is Tarn-X which is a pewter cleaner, but it's sulfur bases and smells terrible.
Just take a small dab of either on a q-tip and scrub. For really dirty games take apart the game and polish it with a scrap cloth from an old tee shirt. I've had games that people used to struggle to get to work, and even then barely function without rampant visual artifacts and severe glitches. Use a bit of metal polish and they work like new.
